Church

Gwilym Leek

When we spoke to Gwilym he was looking forward to representing the churches of Blaenavon as the minister in the Coal House series.

What is your role in Coal House?

During the series, the families will attend a church service and I will be the minister. I have been a lay minister for many years so I'm excited, thrilled and honoured to be representing the churches of Blaenavon.

What do you know about life and work in a 1927 coalmining community?

All of my father's family, apart from him, were miners or connected with coal. I grew up with tales from my uncles of headings and mandrills and the like.

My uncle was an overman in Big Pit for many years, my Uncle Ted was a shot fireman. Coal was the main work in Blaenavon but my parents didn't want me to go down the mine.
