David Michael

The teacher

David Michael applied to be the Coal House teacher via this website. We caught up with him before he travelled back to 1927.

What is your role in Coal House?

I am going to teach the three families' children during their four week experience. They have had time off from their usual schools but they can't be allowed to neglect their studies. They will be given projects to do and some of the children will have to sit a 1927 exam, I believe.

I am a retired secondary school teacher from Sandfields Comprehensive School, Port Talbot, which has possibly the nicest pupils in Wales! I'm looking forward to teaching the three Rs to the 1927 children. I think I'm going to have to be strict.

What do you know about life and work in a 1927 coal mining community?

I grew up in a small mining village called Blaengarw. We lived in a three bed terraced house in David Street which had Ocean Colliery at the top of it. I remember playing on the pit surface and being chased by the NCB security.

The Garw Valley had four pits and everyone was connected with one of them in some way. A lot of my schoolfriends went to work there and some had excellent apprenticeships with the NCB.

I remember once when four of us from the grammar school were playing up in the classroom. We were taken underground at International Colliery (the Carn) one Sunday morning to teach us a lesson. We were 12 years old at the time. Down we went and we walked through some very low seams. The colliers started the disc plough which generated terrible dust and noise. It had a lasting impression on us - we didn't cause any more problems at school. We weren't going down there in a hurry if we could help it!

The production team would like to thank the pupils and staff at Sandfields School for their help with the preparations for the Coal House series.

Will the local teacher enjoy living at the Griffiths'? What will he teach the children?

Andy Rowe (STINNKER) Now in London
Dai taught me physics in middle 70s what a teacher. Well done sir! Really pleased that your doing well. In my class were Stuart Newell, Simon Rigby,Mark Williams the golfer. Take Care & again well done.

DANIELLE from SANDFIELDS

Brett Thomas.Sandfields,Year 00'-05
It was great seeing an old school teacher on tv and obviously enjoying life after his retirement, hope all is well, and enjoy the fishing in your retirement!

Angharad Griffiths (the 1927 pupil)
Mr Michaels, Hope you're well. "If you don't shut your mouth I will punch you in the nose!" Hope you're coping with the 2007 style. Lots of love from the family. Gethin has now learnt his 5 times tables because of a legand teacher (5x5=25)

Amanda, Blaenavon
I think he is a fantastic teacher. He had to be restrained as he was meant to be a 1927 teacher, but it was in his eyes that he wanted to be more supportive, especially with Gethin. Well done Mr Michaels, and long may you continue. I think the Griffiths were the perfect family for him to lodge with...a lot of fun and wouldn't have pushed him to provide extra tuition for their kids which is what I fear the Cartwrights would have done. He was able to go home & forget about work & even had a laugh locking Cerdin in the Henhouse. He was sooo involved in that. It wasn't only the kids!

Dai Llewellyn - Sandfields Port Talbot
Dai, Dai, Dai! Never did I think I'd see the day when the best science teacher I ever met would be teaching kids on box! Brilliant teacher loved by all his pupils, and will be remember forever due to his catchphrases of " Don't be sorry, just don't do it!" and the legendary "Oh Yes!" and "Oh No No No No!". Just think Dai, if a kid fell out a window in 1927, there'd be no paper work to fill out! Keep that in mind!

Gareth Helson from Port Talbot
Legend in the classroom at sandfields comp and now on the TV, best form tutor and science teacher by far

ashley britton pontycymmer
what a performance from david clifton michael, i knew he was a promising actor from the outset, well done dave

Aaron Hill
I love Dai, what a legend. How's the fishing going? Great stuff on tv, hope the book's coming along great. sure you got plenty more stories for us.

stuart : port talbot
Dai will be a iving legend to everyone who watches coal house as he was to the pupils who he give so much time to.

Rob Jones , Sandfields , Port Talbot
Thought I recognised the teacher from Coal House then texted my mate to make sure I was right . Dai Michaels taught me over 20yrs ago in sanfields comp (physics -1986) I was never any use at physics but enjoyed the lessons because Dai always had some story to tell and got his point across without treating the pupils like the kids we were. top man.

jen - chester
What wonderful comments from your past pupils.

Matthew from Port Talbot
Well done sir you crack the whip, make sure you do as well with them as you did with me. Make sure they all pass, after all the reputation is on the line (only joking). I watch it every week i don't think the griffiths deserve you and the kids don't appreciate what an honour it is to have you as a teacher. Daniel and the rest of the family think you're fab and i can't wait to see you in school so we can "talk" about it.

Sara Sandfields Comp
Dai we think you are fabulous on the coal house. All your old colleagues think you missed your vocation, Anthony Hopkins look out! Are you famous in the Garw, can we have your autograph? Good luck we will miss you on the TV.

ivy from Cardiff.
Brilliant show,I've loved every minute of it. I wish it was on every night for longer, instead of the rubbish that we have to watch on other channels. I've laughed more while watching this show than any other, it's hilarious. Well done to all the families for giving us such wonderful entertainment, and BBC, lets have more like it PLEASE.

Danielle Sandfields comp
Dai Michaels was the best teacher in the school, he was funny, a good friend to everyone and respected everyone in the school. When i had him for science that was the only year i enjoyed it and now he's not there i am failing because i don't enjoy it. When I heard he was on the program and i first saw it it brought back a lot of good memories, and all we have left is a visit now and then, photos on the school's web site and NOW we have the most famous and the best teacher in Wales. Good luck in teh future from the school.

Michelle from Sandfields
No way will Dai Michaels find this family hard to live!! He was a brill teacher and earned the respect of everyone at Sandfields Comp! If they listen to him then everyone will learn and have a good laugh!!

Andrew Hornblower
Dai was an absolute legend best science teacher eva.......

yanto no 8 of the garw
teacher dai michael is a livin legend of blaengarw.ask him hows his onions

Dai Davies from Blaengarw
Well done David. An excellent performance. Although never been taught by David, he was the main stay at the local youth club I attended as a child. His sense of fun was always in abundance but you always knew when you'd done something wrong or put a foot out of place. He has a deep bellowing voice that could be heard all over the youth club. Thanks for giving the show an extra sparkle Dai and for giving the Garw something to be proud of again. The BAFTA's are next I think. All the best, Dai Davies.

Clive (Harry) From Kent
Dai Michael has progressed into a fine teacher/actor.The coalhouse team has choosen a sincere person.Very entertaining keep up good work.Hope you enjoy the experience. All the best.

ali from bridgend(dai's sister in law)
dai is a laugh a minute..hope the kids dont take him to seriously.. this role was made for him..keep up the good work uncle dai.we're all so proud of you!!!!

Callum thomas from Llanharry
No. i think he will not enjoy living at the Grffiths as there are lot of distractions compared to the Cartrights where it is alot more quiet. I also think that the Cartrights make nicer meals compared to the Griffiths.

Geogina from ogmore vale
i think david wil enjoy living with the Griffith family as they are very funny especially Debra

jody james nee fry port talbot

RHYS EVANS FROM SANDFIELDS
i cant beleive dai michaels is teaching on here. he was one of the best teachers ever, enjoyed a great 4 years with him. good luck dai

STEVE THOMAS, BRIDGEND.
I watched the Wednesday 31st episode of Coalhouse. In the scene where the teacher explained the economics of the South Wales coalfield in 1927,I thought "That teacher reminds me of Dai Michael". So I had to visit this site straight away to see if it was him. Dai taught me in the early 1970's at Brynteg Comp. One of the best teachers I ever had. "Looking good Dai".

vicki from sandfields
i had txts of my friends saying dai michaels was on here. so i watched it and oh god he was.dai michaels taught me 2 years ago before he retired for physics. such a fab teacher,.i think dai will fit in with the griffiths as he has such a good sense of humour.he will teach the kids will great knowledge.go dai michaels.

Pete Port Talbot
I think Dai will love being in this programme, he is a great teacher, who is down to earth and very fun. But he gets the work done.It has nice seeing him on tv, and i know he will enjoy every minute of his time in the CoalHouse.

Hannah from Sandfields
He taught me science for four years, he's funny ^_^ I plan on watching it! Enjoy Dai x

Mary-Jane from Port Talbot
I watched the first week highlights and thought that there was some thing famillar abut the school teacher and then realised that he'd taught me science for 5 years. Glad to see that he's doing well

Angelina Davies (Campisi) from Neath
Dai Michael was my chemistry teacher at sandfields over 10 years ago.He often spoke with great fondness about his close links with the mining culture, and I truly believe that he will throughly enjoy every minute of his stay. The families have gained an absolute first class teacher, memories of whom they should treasure forever.

jolene williams port talbot
whilst watching the scene where the teacher arrived, i was in total shock to see that it was actually my old comprehensive school teacher mr micheals, he taught me science at sandfields comprehensive school, i thought he had retired abviously not.lol well done sir.

patricia read from barry
what was the song which the children sang in welsh for Debra's 40th birthday?

Diane Michael (David's wife) Blaengarw.
David will enjoy living with the Griffiths for their sense of fun but not the food. He does enjoy a good meal. Although he seems strict at the school he has a good sense of humour and really is a fun guy. There are too many children in the Phillips family for him to relax after a hard day's teaching Although I like their down to earth ways. The Cartwrights would probably want him to carry on with lessons after school which would be very tedious! As long as David can put up with Mrs Griffiths cooking he will be ok. I hope he will teach the children some manners and old fashioned values that were more prominent in 1927 than they are today.

Gethin's 21st Century Class
Good luck in your new school. We are glad you will be coming back to us soon where we do not have any canes! We will be keeping up with your progress on television.Good luck,Dosbarth 5.

jordan from cardigan
i think its goin 2 be a experianse 4 them!!!i feel sorry 4 gethin cause he is findin it hard on times table!!!!

Dosbarth 2 , Gethin's school
We know that Gethin knows his two times table. We hope that he doesn't get into trouble with his teacher. Please put the cane back into the cupboard.

lissa, swansea,
Dai was a great teacher and a supportive fellow member of staff in later life. I think you made the right choice! If he can teach me science, then he can do anything! Can't wait to see what the following weeks will bring. xx

Jon from Bridgend
The teacher looks younger now than when he taught me Physics in the '70s ! So good to see my most memorable teacher on the screen - you inspired me to become a teacher and you're still at it today ! The old methods are the best !

June Jones Oakdale
The Griffiths family are great. The mother has a fantasic sense of humour at the moment, I hope she keeps it up. They are great entertainment value. Its going to be so hard for all the families.

Jonn Jones from Port Talbot
He used to be the Science teacher at my school, Sandfields Comprehensives, he was a great teacher there, one of the best. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Richard from Bridgend
I think the teacher will find it easy living with the Griffiths family as he lived with me for 27 years!

Pat Toake from Cardiff
I think the teacher will find it hard to live with the Griffith family because they are such a fun family and believe in laughing about everything, even when things fo wrong and he will find this quite disrupting. Hopefully he will teach them the three Rs and they will probably be better educated when they come out than when they went in, certainly they will learn to respect their teacher.

James Angell from Croespenmaen
Yes,I think he will enjoy living with the Griffiths, but will they enjoy him living with them? Yet another mouth to feed and provide for, also less space. Hmmm, should be interesting. I think the best thing to teach the children in this era would be the reading, writing and arithmetic.
