BBC - Catchphrase - Ysbyty Brynaber - Week 19

Week 19 - Main grammatical points

Commands

Commands feature regularly in the dialogues. It's worth having a quick look at them.

The plural commands are formed by adding - wch to the stem of the verb.

Eisteddwch
Gwrandewch
Brysiwch
Cofiwch

Dod, mynd, gwneud and bod are irregular forms

Dewch
Ewch
Gwnewch
Byddwch yn dawel

The second person singular is formed by adding -a to the stem of the verb

Eistedda
Gwranda
Brysia
Cofia

Dod, mynd, gwneud and bod are again irregular

Dere (South Wales)
Tyrd (North Wales)
Cer (South Wales)
Dos (North Wales)
Gwna
Bydda'n dawel or Bydd yn dawel

Cyn i/Ar ôl i

'Cyn i' - before and 'Ar ôl i' after are two important phrases which are always followed by the verb noun whatever tense is used.

For example

'Cyn i fi fynd' can mean 'before I go'.
But when used in a past tense context the meaning changes.

Roedd e wedi cyrraedd cyn i fi fynd.
He had arrived before I left

Ar ôl i fi weiddi daeth hi yn ôl
After I shouted she came back.

Casáu

You've probably come across the form 'Mae'n gas gen i' or 'Mae'n gas 'da fi' meaning 'I dislike' or even stronger I hate.

You will also hear the form - casáu

Dw i'n casáu

Dw in casáu pêl-droed

Dw in casáu canu pop
