The Lloyds | Lesson: 2 | Level: Choose

2.2 - Letting people know what you do and don't like.

Today you'll hear the whole of the market research interview with Catrin Lloyd in the supermarket - yn yr archfarchnad. We've already heard the first part - and I hope you remember the questions - 'dych chi'n byw yn lleol? Ble 'dych chi'n byw? and 'dych chi'n siopa yma yn aml? Do you live locally, where do you live, and do you shop here often?

The key word in this next part is hoffi - (like). You use it in exactly the same way as mynd or byw - 'dw i'n hoffi - (I like); 'dych chi'n hoffi? - (do you like?).
Meat in Welsh is cîg and the interviewer asks Catrin 'Dych chi'n hoffi cig? - (do you like meat?) and then goes on to promote the special offers. Does she answer ydw or nac ydw?

Female - Esgusodwch fi. 'Dych chi'n byw yn lleol?
Catrin - Nac ydw.
Female - Ble 'dych chi'n byw?
Catrin - Caerdydd. 'Dw i'n byw yng Nghaerdydd.
Female - 'Dych chi'n siopa yma yn aml?
Catrin - Hm ... nac ydw ... ym ... bob mis.
Female - 'Dych chi'n hoffi cig?
Catrin - Ydw.
Female - 'Dych chi'n hoffi cîg cangarw?
Catrin - Ym oh! ...

Catrin said Ydw - (yes) in reply to 'Dych chi'n hoffi cig? She could have added 'Dw i'n hoffi cig - (I like meat).

And, against her better judgement, she bought some of the cig cangarw on special offer. She mentions it to Guto later at home. She asks him Wyt ti'n hoffi cig? Do you like meat?

Y cig yma is 'this meat'. Wyt ti'n hoffi'r cîg yma? (Do you like this meat?)

Guto asks Beth ydy e? - (What is it?)

Catrin - Guto, rwyt ti'n hoffi cig?
Guro - Ydw.
Catrin - Wyt ti'n hoffi'r cig yma?
Guto - Ydw ... iawn ... beth ydy e?
Catrin - Cig cangarw.
Guto - Cangarw? Ych a fi ... O Catrin.

I'm sure you gathered that Guto's ych a fi meant he wasn't over impressed with the idea of eating kangaroo!

This is a good time to start building your vocabulary. See if you can gather a list of six items of food and drink in Welsh, either by asking somebody or looking for them in a dictionary. Then practise asking 'Dych chi'n hoffi gwin? - (Do you like wine?) or Wyt ti'n hoffi moron? - (Do you like carrots?)
