N.B. Of course, the National Eisteddfod isn't the only eisteddfod in Wales. Apart from the countless local competitions, the other two of the 'Big Three Es' are:
Eisteddfod yr Urdd - Over 100,000 visitors and 40,000 participants make this the biggest youth festival in Europe.
Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod - Nearly 100,000 attend to watch 6,500 competitors representing some 47 countries.
There are also eisteddfodau all around the world with those in North America, Australia and Patagonia being the most well-known.
