Welcome to the unique service which gives you help with non-English musical words and titles throughout this website.

What is BBC Vocab?
Originally developed to help non-fluent Welsh speakers with the BBC's Welsh language service, BBC Vocab has been specially adapted for this site.

If you think that Oh! mio babbino caro means Oh My Dear Baby, or that Nessun Dorma means The Loch Ness Monster's Duvet Cover, you need BBC Vocab!

Turning on Vocab
In order to get help on the web page you are reading within this site, click 'Turn ON' on the button marked BBC Vocab on the left hand side of this page.

That will highlight any word or music title for which we have a definition in our database - the image at the top of this page shows you how a page looks with Vocab switched on.

How to use Vocab
If you put your cursor over any highlighted word or phrase, a tooltip box will appear containing an English translation of it. Try turning it on now, to see what happens with these titles:
  • Zdorov li, knyaz?
  • Questa o quella
  • Blodau'r flwyddyn yw f'anwylyd

Turning off Vocab
To turn BBC Vocab off, simply click on the button, which now says 'Turn OFF'.

This is a wonderful service!

John Duffield fro Beddgelert
The principle of VOCAB should be applied to all pages with unusual or technical vocabulary, just as GOOGLE has translation facilities in various languages, by hovering the curser over the particular word, or saying whilst surfing the net. The Principle is excellent
