Nicole Cabell, USA, Final

Another little black dress from Nicole Cabell, this time a vest dress with embroidery and beading - totally simple and totally lovely. She added a crystal necklace and the hair was left to tumble, probably a good idea in the heat and humidity of Cardiff on the day.

Nicole has given us some interesting repertoire this week. Many people in the audience linked Tippett's 'How can I cherish my man in such days?' to Bob Geldof's upcoming Live8 concerts. The piece is as relevant today as when Tippett wrote it.

I wasn't entirely convinced about her Mozart - she was patrician and smiling but it felt like a bit of a plateau in the programme and her words weren't particularly clear. Then, in the Berlioz, I was just thinking, 'whatever happened to the communication of last week?' when it happened. Like someone dropping a match into a box of fireworks, Nicole took off. It was superb - notes, runs, trills, loud, soft, you name it, it was there. Fantastic, real competition material.
