Andrew Kennedy, England, Song Final
How do you plan for two finals in 48 hours? That's the challenge for three of tonight's competitors, including Andrew Kennedy. For all the competitors, the programmes at the Song Final seemed more traditional with fewer 'risks' taken in repertoire or delivery but that is inevitable with so much at stake. |

Andrew was first on stage tonight. He is a natural storyteller so every song comes across easily. The programme was put together well and flowed from a serenade, through a nocturne and sleep to the brightness of morning flowers. Perhaps I was alone in hoping he might have included another English piece, say by Dowland, to complement the Gurney, since he is such a great communicator in English.
Despite wearing tails, Andrew's recital felt relaxed and informal. Even at St David's Hall, which has a wide auditorium, he managed to recapture most of the intimacy of his delivery at the New Theatre. He was more still than before but that reflected the repertoire choice. Nerves are inevitable on this occasion but they were not in evidence and Andrew appeared to enjoy his programme as much as we did.
