Born in Limerick, Owen Gilhooly trained at the RCM and the National Opera Studio supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, the Belfast Classical Music Bursary, the RVW Trust and the Sibyl Tutton Trust.

Roles include Dancairo (Carmen) (Castleward Opera and Cork Opera 2005), Elder Ott (Susannah) and Parmenione (L'occasione fa il ladro) (Wexford Festival), Father (Hansel and Gretel), Marcello (La Bohème) and Dandini (La Cenerentola) (OTC, Dublin), Valentin (Faust) (Opera Ireland), Mercury (The Coronation of Poppea) (Buxton Festival), Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) (Lyric Opera, Dublin), Figaro (The Barber of Seville) (Savoy Opera), Philoctetes (Trojan Trilogy), Eckbert (Blond Eckbert) (The Opera Group) and Falke (Die Fledermaus) (ETO, Scottish Opera).

He made his début at the ROH singing the Fauré Requiem for the Royal Ballet, and at the BBC Proms singing Bill Bobstay HMS Pinafore (conducted by Mackerras).

He sings regularly in concert, and current engagements include Capellio I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Grange Park), Figaro The Barber of Seville (OTC), Ping Turandot (Opera Ireland), L'Enfance du Christ (BBC SO conducted by Davis), Carmina Burana (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, RLPO) and Friday Night is Music Night (BBC CO).

Recordings include Joyce Songs (RTÉ Concert Orchestra) and hobbies include cinema, gym, reading, theatre and walking.
