The 2001 competition took place between 10 and 16 June in Cardiff, Wales.

  • Concert one: Sunday 10 June
  • Concert two: Monday 11 June
  • Concert three: Tuesday 12 June
  • Concert four: Wednesday 13 June
  • Concert five: Thursday 14 June
  • The final: Saturday 16 June

Such was the demand for tickets for the final that, in a bid to accommodate more members of the public wishing to enjoy the event's unique atmosphere, there was an overflow big-screen facility for spectators unable to get tickets for St David's Hall.

In 2001 this popular event was held in the splendid setting of the Coal Exchange, Cardiff Bay, and tickets included a pasta supper.

Master classes were held on Friday 15 June, These were given by jury members Marilyn Horne, Gundula Janowitz and Tom Krause, joined by Barbara Bonney. They imparted their wisdom and experience to eight non-finalists.
