Fragility

By Vicky Wilson
September 2003, Caldicot
A digital story from Capture Wales

A delicate balance

Vicky expresses her thoughts on life and questions its fragility through her artwork.

"This is me. This is how I really am. This is how I feel inside and how it's going to be.

Over the past years I have lost those dear to me - my mother, my brother-in-law, my niece, my son, my father-in-law and another brother-in-law - so many loved ones. I sometimes feel I'm drowning - my head gets in a spin.

A fragile, iridescent little thing, hung so precariously in the wind. We all hang in the balance.

It's all so very different now. I try to be creative, just like I did before. But somehow, I cannot reach inside which takes me far beyond and more.

How do I lift this blanket, which smothers from within? I want to work with feeling once more, but all I feel is numbness and not much more.

So I am hopeful for tomorrow and maybe time will melt away this awkwardness inside. "

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I am a visual arts practitioner who works in clay at a home-based studio. My work is involved with delivering arts workshops in all sectors of the community. My aim is to be expressive through art and more especially through sculpture.

What's your story about?
Coping with being a creative person who has to share those skills with others. How difficult it is to be expressive when you are constantly distracted by inner feelings or not! I wanted people to appreciate how important and how fragile we all are and how it affects us when we lose those very special people in our lives.

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
Producing a visual record of something inside my head in an unfamiliar medium and gaining many new skills from an extremely talented and professional team. One of those better experiences of life - just like 'a good piece of cheese!'
