Pants

By Phil Wheeler
June 2004, Upper Corris
A digital story from Capture Wales

Too much choice?

Are most of the choices that come our way all a little too overwhelming? Phil Wheeler from Upper Corris thinks so. Here he takes a look at the claustrophobic choices that comes his way...

"Too much honey and too much jam,
too much mail and too spam,
too much CD 3d seedy TV
freeplay, anytime, all time, Broadband,
Neverland. I-Max mutliplex, T-Rex
Digital, Widgetal, blue sky grants.
Too many shell suits and colours of pants.

Too much pasta, too much shape,
too much cheese and too much grape,
too much bread and too many slices
of cheesy whotsits and junkmail prizes
and gears and ccs
and lottos and zeros
and glossy black prattle and lifestyle heroes
and megastore driverthu sugarnut cherios.
Too many plant pots, too many plants
too many thongs and colours of pants.

Too many channels and too many songs,
too many rights and too many wrongs,
too many hands on too many bands on...
too many phoney ring tone clones.

Too many pictures in too many frames
and too many candles and not enough flame.
Too many fleeces in too many styles,
and too many odd socks, too many files
of photos, investments and policy statement
and pension insurance Alliance and pester.
Too many Sky and too much news
and plaudits and pundits and contrary views.
and credit card, nectar points, holes in the wall
and too many traps for innocents falling
and
destinations,
with leaflets and pamphlets and
long lost relations
and friends reunited.
And flavours, organics and thermals and thrills
cults and confusion - new-improved 'no frills'.

Supplements, additives, lucrative sedatives,
vitamin essence of life styling pills.
Biros and pencils and lap-topping implants
and silicon bodies and colours of pants
and too many shelves of empty invention.
Too many searches for too many heavens
Too many voices,
We are slaves to our choices."

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I live near Machynlleth with my wife, Ann, and four children coming and going. I don't normally make breakfast with no clothes on and the thong is superimposed.

What's your story about?
I love life. I am baffled by the choice of underpants let alone CDs, videos, garden plants, holidays and which side of the bed to get out of. Making the right choice and restricting our choices can enrich our loves and allow us to give time to the important things - family, friends... and digital storytelling workshops.

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
The creative process and the connection with the other people on the workshop.

Your comments

"Nothing short of brilliant. " Chase, Machynlleth, Wales, Tue Sept 2007.

"Congratulations! A very thought-provoking piece of work. Good to listen to, good to watch. Made me smile!" Linda, Surrey, England, Tue Sept 2007.
