Fear and Love

By Jo Munton
June 2004, Machynlleth
A digital story from Capture Wales

Cariad ...and Cake!

Jo looks back at a fearful past. But she's determined not to let fear shape her future.

"It's a strange thing, but sometimes, even now, I get a little scared to tell my story... but that's just fear really... and well, me and fear we go way back.

Once upon time I was so scared I ran away from those fears... and running and running and running for years and years, but somewhere along that up hill road I learnt one of the most valuable lessons - that despite all its fears, life is still an adventure.

And at some magical point a while ago, me and the love of my life, my girlfriend, my cariad started a journey that has many chapters and is still unfolding.

One September, we decided to throw a big party and the guest of honour was our love... and like most things we've done we made it up as we went along. We had some traditional marriage elements, our hands where bound together by a blacksmith and we where blessed by a chimney sweep... and we had cake!A wedding to some a hand fasting to others, to us it was chance to celebrate our love and commitment to each other.

Standing there amongst so many loved ones, feeling their support and encouragement and happiness for us, a truly amazing, almost overwhelming experience.

Our journey together goes on and on. It's still an amazing adventure and I look back and I'm so glad that I didn't let my fears rule my life or else I might never have found my love."

Please tell us a little about yourself.
I am a puppeteer with Vagabondi Puppeteer. I was brought up in North Kent in a Welsh/Cockney family. I travelled for years around Britain and Europe in various trucks, vans and caravans.

Why did you choose to tell this particular story?
My story is about the hand-fasting (wedding) of me and my girlfriend. I chose to tell it because it did scare me, and so it seemed necessary.

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
Meeting all the folks, both on the team and fellow storytellers.
