Jessica, Student/sales advisor at Miss Selfridges
Jessica comes up with a few new words which mean unattractive.
John Lapsky, Driver
John recalls his schoolboy days when pumps were plimsoles - or even green flash.
Long description of interview: The group of interviewees were a good example of how people speak in the East End of London. All three where born and grew up in Hackney. Johnny and Marion are married and so shared some of the words and phrases. Jessica is from the same area but younger, 16 years old, so she had some very new words and expressions. All three seemed to enjoy talking about words and how they said things. They also had no problem describing their accents. The group reacted really well when describing people and feelings. Words around the term 'tired' or 'attractive' kicked off discussions.
Women talk 'posher': Across the world in almost every language studied, females use more 'prestige', 'standard' forms of language. The exception is extreme Arabic societies where women do not participate in public life.
