TOOTH FAIRY
By Molly Oxford
Losing her first tooth came as a surprise to six year old Molly. One minute, she was brushing her teeth, the next, her tooth had fallen out! It's a complicated process, preparing the tooth for the fairies: washing and drying it before putting it into a magic box. Then comes the hard bit - waiting for the tooth fairy and wondering how many pennies she'll get in return for her pearly white peg.

My son was scared stiff at the thought of the tooth fairy. I had just been reading him an Irish fairy tale about the fairies coming and taking a child and leaving a changeling in his place. My son was worried that they would come through the letter box and take him away. I said they only wanted his teeth, and in any case, he couldn't fit through the letter box. He said if they were strong enough to lift his pillow, with him lying on it, they were strong enough to chop him into pieces and pass him, piece by piece, through the letter box. He was getting so anxious, that I thought I'd better tell him the truth. So I told him that I was the tooth fairy, and it was all just a story for children - but that he shouldn't tell anyone, because most kids still believe in the tooth fairy. Very soon afterwards, one of his friends came up to me, grinning from ear to ear. I thought he was just being friendly, but he was in fact showing me a gap in his teeth. Apparently, the story was going round that I was the tooth fairy - not just for my own son, but for the whole country ...
