Ace Pakistani cricketer, and world's highest wicket-taker in one-day internationals, Wasim Akram has announced his retirement, again. And this time he says he means it.
A fearsome bowler, known for his lightening quick wrist movements, his deceptive deliveries, and crackling though inconsistent batting, was also linked with betting, smoking marijuana on a tour, and often involved in high-temper exchanges with colleagues and opponents.
How do you rate Wasim as a player? What'd you like to tell him on his retirement? Do you think he can be persuaded to change his decision?
Wasim Akram is the best bowler of world. I am very sad to hear that he is retiring. He is not old enough to get retired. He should have played for at least two three more years. My request to Wasim is please never leave cricket. I will not forget his bowling in the World Cup match against England in 1992.
Makki Prince, Sargodha
Wasim is the best player in one-day cricket. No one is like him. We will never forget Wasim.
Abdul Waheed, Sadiq Abad
I think there are no words to acknowledge his contribution for Pakistan. Wasim is the best. Wasim bhai, please do not try to enter in politics like Imran Khan. Although it is early, but since there are selectors like Amer Sohail, we support your dicision. We wish you all the very best.
Atta ur Rehmna Qureshi, Toronto
Wasim bhai is the great bowler. He is very nice man. He is a good bastsman. Pakistan cricket did not respect him, so they lost a good player. I pary for Wasim bhai that he live long. Wish you all the best.
M H Shakeel, Jeddah
Wasim Akram. Simply, he is the legend. All cricket lovers salute this greatest cricket!
Qasim butta, Chicago
Wasim Akram was a great all-rounder of Pakistani team. The Prime Minister should announce a party to hounour Wasim.
Mohd Saleem, Jacobabad
| | | | | | Waseem Akram is the best player in the world, but the Pakistan Cricket Board has always mistreated and humiliated its best players. | | | | | Musheer Ahmed Qureshi | | Waseem Akram is the best player in the world, but the Pakistan Cricket Board has always mistreated and humiliated its best players. Javed Miandad is a prime example of this. The Boad sucks these players dry and then just discards them as if they were useless. Wasim Akram should continue playing , he is a far better bowler than any of the present team's bowlers.
Musheer Ahmed Qureshi, Delhi
He must come back so that young players can learn more.
Javaid, Rahimyar Khan
Waseem Akram is the best player in Pakistan circket team. But I think age was catching on him and he needed rest. I hope he does not change his mind.
Saeed Ahmad, Hong Kong
It was a timely decision. Now he should coach the youngsters. We are proud of him.
Tahir Rashid, Pakistan
Hats off to Wasim Akram. As a Pakistani I am proud of him. Thank you, Wasim bhai. No one can ever replace him.
Ali Butt, USA
Great career with a sad ending.
Ali, Australia
Wasim was one of the best crickter in history of the game.
Muhammad Riaz, USA
It is a timely decision by Wasim. God bless him in his future life.
Dr Tahir Rao, Canada
Wasim bhai please continue playing for your fans.
Basharat, Pakistan
He is the BEST.
Farrukh, Pakistan
In Pakistan great cricketers like Javed Miandad, Abdul Qadir etc. did not get a fair deal. The same thing happend with great Wasim.
Ziaur Rehman, Peshawar
I have no word to admire Wasim. He is so great and his sort of players is not born every day. There is no comparison with him.
Asim, Pakistan
The legendry life of Wasim Akram cannot be retired in cricketing world. Now, It has become an institution for new comers. The history of cricket cannot be completed without Wasim Akram..
Sohail, USA
He is one of the great players in the cricket history. he should stay in cricket for 2 years.
Asghar Mahmood, Toronto
In Pakistani team he was the only person for whom we saw the matches of Pakistani team. But now there is nothing left in the Pakistani team. He was and he is and he will be the superiorest bowler in the word of cricket. No other bowler can take his place.
Talat Ghazi Kha, Khan Garh
| | | | | | Well I think it is a right decision of Akram at this moment as the new comers will find a place in the new team. | | | | | Nisae, Saudi Arabia | | Well I think it is a right decision of Akram at this moment as the new comers will find a place in the new team. When some one fails to do some thing in the old age, he must keep himself out and give others chance as well. This is what I can guess and at the same time we must not forget the World Cup 1992 as the man behind the achievement was none other than the great Wasim Bhai.
Nisae, Saudi Arabia
Wasim Akram is the best bowler of world. I am very sad to hear that he is retiring. He is not old enough to get retired. He should have played for at least two three more years. My request to Wasim is please never leave cricket. I will not forget his bowling in The World Cup match against England in 1992.
Syed Aamir Sohail Shah, Jhang
Wasim is the best cricketer of the world. He should be the captain of Pakistan team. His retirement decision is early. He should take back his decision and should be appointed the captain of Pakistan cricket team. The team needs Wasim Akram as a leader.
M Nasrullah Khan, Islamabad
It must be no doubt that Wasim Akram is a good player but I think he should have announced his retirement in Sharjah where he kept so many records and this was the only way to honour him.
Imran Shafiq, Gujrat
Is this kind of election campaign for Wasim Akram in which you guys are just taking those comments which go in his favour?
Khusro Zubairi, Houston, USA
I think he played long cricket and this decision is right. Now we should give chance to our new boys. Wasim is a great player and his performance will always be remembered in cricket history.
Chuni Lal, Dadu Sindh
His decision is right. I think he should have retired at the final of World Cup.
Nasir Mahmood, Rawalpindi
No doubt, Wasim is a great bowler and I think that he should come back to International cricket and serve Pakistan for at least two more years.
Shaukat Jang, Peshawar
Retirement of Wasim from cricket is really a big loss for Pakistan. No doubt he is a great player; no body can understand the politics of PCB. It’s a good decision by Wasim to retire now. New talent will prove themselves.
Chand Ayoub, Haripur
Because of allegations of match-fixing on him, Pakistani people were losing interest in the game. Now, we will be able to see Pakistani team playing cricket with more interest.
Umer, Dallas
I think that Wasim Akram is the best bowler in the world and Pakistan team want this type of bowler to achive his goals.
Wajeeh, Lahore
Well, I think in this poll, there is no single person who can criticize Wasim Akram. This means that he is real hero of ours. I think he must play for some more seasons with younger cricketers because he not only can play but also guide and back up other fellow cricketers.
Qadir Rashdi, Nawabshah
Right decision but late. Please do not change your mind again. Good bye Wasim!
Mohammed Zia ul Haq, Riyadh
Hello Wasim, that is your good decision. I like this very much but you should check whether there is any more record pending or not?
Yousaf, Rahim Yar Khan
| | | | | | He was the best player of all time in one day cricket. This is not appropriate way in which this great player is forced to retire. | | | | | Imtiaz Ahmed Advocate, Islamabad | | He was the best player of all time in one day cricket. This is not appropriate way in which this great player is forced to retire. I think he should not return even on the demand of PCB. He should have been given great honour and respect while leaving cricket but unfortunately this could not happen. It is very shameful that great players are forced to retire in such a humiliated manner in Pakistan.
Imtiaz Ahmed Advocate, Islamabad
I was very disappointed when I heard that the fast bowler has retired from the cricket. Wasim need to play three years more. He is the one star in Pakistan team & if he leaves cricket than it's not so an interesting game. My request to him is to come back.
Shahab Jan, Santa Clara
Wasim Akram is the best All rounder in the world. His decision of retirement is shocking to me. He should change his decision and come back into the cricket. He can play at least two years more. Such types of heroes are never born in the country. I hope that he will change his decision. Pakistan needs his services very much.
Bashir Hussain, Jhang
I think that Wasim is one of the greatest players of Pakistan but every one has to retire; so he is also retiring but we will all remember Wasim as a great "hero"!
Farhan, Pakistan
I was very shocked with the decision of great legend in world cricket. Historically no doubt he is a great bowler in cricket world. I worry about the court decision against Wasim. I pay tribute and best best wishes for the rest of his life.
Raja Aamir Kiani, Islamabad
Dear Wasim, though I do not have any authority to give you any title. But, as for as I am concerned, I can call you the “Beloved cricketer" of Pakistan. We are proud of you. We recognise that you gave our county the most precious years of your life. I also thank your family as they allowed you to spend your time for the honor of this country. As long as cricket is alive, you will be there.
Adeel, Dera Ghazi Khan
A cricketer has retired but a legend is born. Wasim has achieved something that many people can only dream for. It was a very good decision. I wish him a very good luck ahead his life.
Jawed, Sorrathia, Chicago
When I read the news about great Wasim Akram's retirement, I was surprised but I think it was a good decision. Now he should transfer his experience into new generation for a better Pakistani team. Thanks Wasim for your great performances for Pakistan. God bless you and your family. Best of luck for your good future.
M Ismail Baltistani, Karachi
Wasim Akram is the best player in cricket history. But one day a great player have to retire. God bless you, we will like you seeing on TV as a cricket expert.
Asif, Toronto
Wasim is no doubt a great player. Except for a few allegations of match fixing, his career is full of magnificent performances and hard to beat records. It is sorry to say here that Army Generals are destroying everything from constitution to cricket. May Allah give them wisdom.
Shahzad, Baltimore
Wasim was the best fast bowler I saw and the only one who could bow six different balls in a single over. Wasim was to fast bowling what Picasso is to art. Truly a magician. I believe that his retirement is timely & now he should give his country back what he learnt that developed him into a world beater. He should work to prepare the future generation of Pakistan fast bowlers.
Farhan Feroz, Karachi
I was shocked to read the news of the great Waseem Akram's retirement from cricket. He was a truly great fighter in the field.
Anayat Ali, Haripur, Pakistan
There is no doubt he is great player as well as a captain. I think his decision is very disappointing and he should came back and leave the cricket in good style.
Basharat Ali Shad, Faisalabad, Pakistan
| | | | | | We have to be proud of this super hero. | | | | | M. Naseem | | We have to be proud of this super hero. This is not a time to leave the Pakistani cricket team because he is the only person who can lead the team and train new comers. In my point of view he can still play for three more years.
M. Naseem, Saudi Arabia
I would say that we have lost our left arm fast bowler. This is unfortunate for the world of cricket as well, because it has lost the beauty of fast bowling. I don't think that this is the right time for him to retire. I think he should serve Pakistan as a captain for two more years.
He is great among the greatests.
Ahmad Raza Khan, Karachi, Pakistan
His retirement is late but not too late. Yes he is the greatest bowler and he will remain in our memories forever.
Umair Ansari, Karachi, Pakistan
Wasim is a great bowler.
Qamar Mirza, Chakwal, Pakistan
Wasim is the best all rounder in the world and he is the world's top bowler.
Abrar, Dubai
It is a right decision.
Touseef Arshad, Pakistan
| | | | | |
He is a great player and no one can compete with him. | | | | | Kashif Moosa | | He is a great player and no one can compete with him. Now I think he has taken a right decision to withdraw himself from international cricket, but he should not withdraw himself from cricket. He can do a lot for cricket in Pakistan. I hope we will be able to see him in future.
Kashif Moosa, Karachi, Paksitan
PCB has not treated this great bowler fairly which forced him to take decision of retirement. Its not fair that highest wicket taker is not sellected & Shoaib the biggest failure has been sellected. He deserved to be in team.
Aziz Baig, Dubai
He is still very popular and a great bowler.
M Azam Mughal, Karachi, Pakistan
Sooner or later every player has to decide about his retirement and it is the right and in time decision of Wasim Akram to see off international cricket. Waseem Akram was a best all-rounder particularly bowler. I would like to give my message to Wasim Akram that his decision of retirement is absolutely at the right time as Imran Khan did at his peak of the career and now he should be firm in his decision and never think of changing it.
Ch Jamil Ahmed Khan, Kamalia, Pakistan
I think that he should play more for Pakistan team, so that he make more records. His records are already a pride for Pakistan.
Kamran Kiyani, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
| | | | | | I think that he has taken a good decision. | | | | | Qaisar | | I think that he has taken a good decision. Now it's time Pakistan has to promote his new and younger talent. But we don't have to forget what he has done for Pakistan team. He is an experinced bowler. So we are hoping that he will be working for the Pakistani team in the future.
Qasiar, Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Wasim Akram is the best bowler of world. I am very sad to hear that he is retiring. My request to Wasim is please never leave cricket.
Farman Ullah Khak Saar, Swat, Pakistan
Wasim Akram is a very good player. I wish him best of luck and I hope that he work for Pakistani cricket team in future.
Naseem Wahid Bhatti, Multan, Pakistan
Well, I think he is no doubt a great player and PCB should give him credit for his great services to Pakistan. PCB should arrange a big show for Wasim Akram.
Ahmer, Karachi, Pakistan
Pakistan's cricket without Wasim is incomplete. Best of luck to Wasim.
Sohail Ahmed, Rawalpindi, Pakistan
I am a fan of Wasim Akram and I want him to stay in Pakistan cricket team and play more cricket. We are with him and we pray to Allah to give him more success in his future life.
Ibrar, Riyadh
Now Pakistan cricket will be clear of match fixing.
Farhaj, Pakistan
| | | | | | If he have had displayed professional attitude along with professional cricket, he would have been the greatest legend. | | | | | Ali Raza | | If he have had displayed professional attitude along with professional cricket, he would have been the greatest legend. But still, what Wasim has done for Pakistan can never be re-paid. He, certainly, is a legend and 'King of the Ring'. I think it's time for him to say Good Bye to Cricket.
Ali Raza, Pakistan
Wasim is no doubt the greatest left arm fast bowler ever. I think not only the greatest fast bowler but he is also a great cricketer, fantastic all-rounder and a brave captain. He is definetly a chapter of cricket in Pakistan as well as in the world. World has never seen such a great cricketer before. "He Is Best of The Best."
Ghammas, Rawalpindi Pakistan
As a player he is simply the best. We have not seen Sir Garry Sober but we have seen Wasim Akram although his batting performance is not up to his potential but his bowling is far more superior. In his batting whenever he is attacking against fast bowlers he is affective but when he is deffensive he looks ordinary. He can still play. PCB is not treating him and other senior players well. So he should say "enough is enough".
Majid Iqbal, Multan, Pakistan
This is the end of a world's greatest left arm bowler ever. He ruled the cricket like a king. You can't compare him with any other bowler. He was fantastic. Decision to retire is on the right time. I'm sure he'll stick to his decision.
Bilal Ahmed, Islamabad, Pakistan
Pakistan is fortunate that it has produced great cricketer, like Wasim Akram. Definitely Wasim will be known as a great cricketer in the world for a long time. Wasim has done great job for Pakistan on many occasions. I think, he should play for more than one year.
Muhammad Haleem Abbasi, Abbottabad, Pakistan
I have never seen a great legendary player like Wasim Akram in my life. The dictatorship in Cricket wins once again as in other matters but democratically he bowled out Mr. Tauqir Zia with his performance.
Muhammad Ismail, Multan, Pakistan
He was a great player in his early 30s but ever since he got invovled in mix fixing scandal he lost all his credibilty and grace.
Bushra Shah, Karachi, Pakistan
Thank GOD he has left.
Saad, Canada
This is not good for Pakistan cricket. I am really shocked.
Memuna Butt, Oman
He should be retired from Cricket because he is too old.
Waheedullah, Peshahwar, Pakistan
Wasim is The Super Bowler Of The World. I always like him. I am Proud because Wasim belongs to my country.
Kamran Khan, Islamabad, Pakistan
He is a born star and a real fighter. We want him to play as long as he can. He is the heart beat of Pakistan cricket.
Zahid, Pakistan
| | | | | | I hope he will never think of coming back. | | | | | Raja Khan | | It is a good decision. He has no place in the team due to gambling. I hope he will never think of coming back. We do not need any gambler in the team.
Raja Khan, Gujranwala, Pakistan
He is a history maker player. He has taken a perfect decision at a perfect time.
Sajid Hussain, Islamabad
On behalf of people of Pakistan I request Wasim bhai to take back his decision.
Khalid, Lahore, Pakistan
In the history of cricket the name of Wasim Akram will be written in 'bold'. He is an outclass cricketer, he gave a new era to left arm bowlig. Cricket lovers will remember him forever. As he is retiring now, i suggest Pakistan Cricket Board should give him a remarkable farewell.
Abdul Naeem Khan, Lahore, Pakistan
Tragedy for Pakistan sports and Gen Tauqeer Zia is responsible for this. For the sake of Pakistan cricket government should wake up and take some action.
Zeeshan, Kuwait
He is a great bowler and team player. It seems like Pakistan team has gone 20 years back. He has left a big gap.
Nadeem, Dubai, UAE
End of his glorious career is a kind of end of "Cricket" in Pakistan. Wasim is actually the other name of "Cricket" in Pakistan.
Gohar Aftab, Las Vegas, USA
He was a good cricketer but also a gambler. We should have treated him as the Sout Africa treated Hansie Cronje but unfortunately.
Iftikhar Ahmad Khattak, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
He is a good player and I think he should play for two more years.
Atif Ali, Dubai, UAE
There is no bowler like him. We will miss him.
Rahim, Abu Dhabi, UAE
I think that Wasim should play for Pakistan for at least one more world cup as a skipper. Don't go Wasim.
Qambar Ali, Lahore, Pakistan
Waseem was and still is a great player. He should take back hs decision of retirement. His performance in the recent World Cup was higher than any Pakistani player. Waqar should be punished instead of Wasim.
Hamid Marwat, Islamabad, Pakistan
Wasim is great and we want him to play more for Pakistan as a captan.
Sohail Abbas, Pakistan
Wasim should play cricket as a captain of Pakistan team.
Farooq, R Y Khan, Pakistan
He is one of the legends of cricket like Imran Khan or any other great player in the world. He played brilliantly throughout his career and is an inspiration for the generations to come.
Shaukat Ali Khan, Burnay, Canada
Wasim is a great player. I will call him the victim of politician of Pakistan Cricket Board. He was forced to retire from cricket. He can play for other three or four years.
Sherzad Miakhel, St. Louis, USA
Wasim Akram is one of the best all rounder of the century who took 400+ wickets in both one day and test cricket. I think it is good time for him to retire, because he is 36 and he can only play for two more years, which is not sufficient because we need young fast blowers for World Cup 2007.
Aamir Malik, Hamilton, Canada
I think Wasim Akram did take right decision. He should give chance to new players.
Attiq, Dadyal, Pakistan
No doubt, he was a great player cricket ever produced. I wish him all the best for his new assignment and it is better for him and for the country that he should stick to his decision of retirement.
M H Mumal, Toronto, Canada
Wasim Akram was and is truly the greatest cricket player. The speedy left hander with a short run up tormented every batsmen for 19 years. He is the master of the reverse swing, the king of wickets in both forms of the game. He truly is uncomparable. In my mind, he was the only Pakistani player who contributed anything in the recently concluded World Cup. The way the Pakistani team limped out of the tournment was truly a slap in the face of such a great individual. He surely deserved much better recognition by the Pak cricket bosses.
Mohsin Ahsan, New York, USA
Mr Tauqeer Zia is responcible for this. His ego will soon eliminate circket from Pakistan.
Mohsin Ali, Pakistan
The debate on his retirement shows what a great cricker he is, but his retirement is a timely decision. World of cricket will surely miss one of the greatest star of its time.
Zahid Naqvi, Brampton, Canada
I personally feel very sad because i am a very big fan of him, and not only because I am a fan of him I feel that his decision is wrong but also because he is not old enough to get retired. He should have played for at least two to three more years. A star and a hero of the nation like him really are not born every day. It was bad luck for him that Pakistan did not win the World Cup. It is not fair that the team selection committee did not put him in the new team. I wish that he would come back.
Khalid Minhas, Toronto, Canada
Pakistan Cricket Board made a terrible mistake of closing their door on perhaps the greatest bowler and definitely the best left arm fast bowler in history of cricket. It's strange to see how Rashid Latif could be pulled out of his retirement to make him captain but not to utilise Wasim's experience. Just remember World Cup game against Australia where he single handedly brought Aussie top order to crash out. He is a bowler of all seasons and can work wonder on even slowest picthes in the world. Its truely a loss for international cricket and he is still going great in county cricket. PCB wake up and make rational decisions.
Jawid Mirza, Santa Clara, USA
He is still better than many.
Azhar, Pakistan
This is a big loss for Pakistan Cricket.
Pervez Bukhsh, Toronto
It's a loss for Pakistan team, but victory of corrupt cricket board of Pakistan.
Ayaz, Baltimore USA
No doubt, Wasim Akram will be remembered as one of the great player of cricket, a master of reverse swing. But his wicket taking ability had diminshed. Though it will be considered as a painful decision by many cricket fans the world over, it looks timely. May Allah help him in his new endeavors.
Karimdad Sandeelo, Karachi, Pakistan
A fighter, and a record maker. Top class allrounder. He deserves more than what he is given by us. I'll never forget the two consecutive balls in the World cup final. About retirement he can play one or two more years and can increase his records for Pakistan. Still in World Cup 2003 he was one of the players in Pakistan team who fought and never gave up. And he got wickets. But as he has taken the decision now he should stick to it like another hero Imran Khan.
Khurram Sharafat, Karachi Pakistan
In my opinion, he is one of greatest player in cricket history. I think that he deserved more than that from Pakistan Cricket Board. After the retirement of Imran Khan in 1992, he deserved to be the Captain of Pakistan till his retirement. He should be persuaded to change his decision by Pakistan Cricket Board and he should be Captain of Pakistan.
Sajid Rashid, Faisalabad, Pakistan
I will not forget his bowling in the final World Cup match against England in 1992, especially his thrilling performance when he get two crucial wickets in two consecutive deliveries.
Khalid R Khan, USA
He is one of the best cricketer of his time. In my opinion, in cricket history he is number two after Sir Donald Bradman. He made the right decision at right time as he did in 1992 World Cup final.
Zia Wakil, Toronto, Canada
I think Wasim is right, its time for him to say good bye to international cricket. He played very well, no doubt about it. He is a true hero of Pakistan's cricket history.
Atif Mirza, Melbourne, Australia
One chapter of cricket is closed now. No doubt Wasim is the player of this century. The start of this chapter was very good but end is very sad. No more comments.
Shahnawaz Naseer, Denmark, Copenhagen
We are very happy after the retirment of this stupid person. He was a big Jawaria.
Nauman Gulzar, Gujranwala, Pakistan
Waseem bahi please stay for just two more years and create more records, because you are a wonderful all rounder.
Ali Hassan, Maryland, USA
Wasim has served Pakistan cricket wonderfully but the time has come for him to call it a day respectfully. There are not many cricketers in Pakistan who have left cricket respectfully. Now Wasim should try to do something good for his country off the field so that he can wash out the match fixing allegations against him.
Fareed Hamza, Karachi
Wasim Akram is one of the best crickters of all times. Pakistan got its highest number of victories in 1992 because of his magical bowling. He has reamined a great asset for Pakistan cricket. I would like that Pakistan Cricket Board should pursuade him to change his decision and retire him in a cermony held in Pakistan.
Naveed Hayder, Montreal, Canada
I think he should have done this with dignity at the end of World Cup.
Saqib Saeed, Germany
He is my friend. I will miss him in cricket grounds. Best wishes for Wasim and Huma.
Shafiq, Oldham, Manchester
Wasim was superb as a player. I would like to request him please come back.
Ali Afaq, Jhelum, Pakistan
I would like to say he is a great bowler and great cricketer.
Jawad Mahmood, Colchester, UK
Wasim Akram is definitely one of the greatest fast bowler in cricket history, but the way he is forced to announce his retirement is shameful. Pakistan Cricket Board have an old tradition of retiring great players with no respect and the few examples are Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad and many more. The great fast bowler is accused of showing poor performance in the World Cup then how would PCB rate the performance of Shoaib Akhtar, who always brag about his performance but do nothing when it is necessary and why is he still in Pakistani squad. I would like to pay tribute to this great fast bowler for his achievements. In my opinion Wasim Akram has done a lot in the cricket history to be remembered for decades, neither he would come back nor he should be persuaded to do so.
Syed Sultan, Detroit, USA
He should have been retired four years ago but in Pakistan nobody retires voluntarily.
Ali Shaker, Doha, Qatar
Wasim Will be remembered as one of the most prolific performer. Undoubtably cricket will remember Wasim for his pace and fury forever. He will be known as one of the World's best all rounder.
Shahid Nawaz, Middlebrough, England
A legend swallowed once again by dirty politics.
Naeem, Lahore, NWFP, Pakistan
Wasim Akram has been one of the best cricket players in the world and will be remembered as a hero. As far his negative news side is concerned that does not bother most fans. I wish him all the best in retirement from cricket and hope to see him in some sort of new getup. What ever he does I am sure he will do it just as good as his past record. Wasim Akram we will love you forever. May God bless you. You have given the whole world a lot of joy and pleasure and will not be forgotten easily by millions all over the world. Well done.
Ashraf, London
Come Back Wasim
