Laura Spence

Hello. I took up the new role of Producer, Ulster-Scots in June 2009 after ten years in the BBC. As well as developing this website, I will be involved in content-gathering and community outreach work as well as the occasional radio contribution.

I have always been interested in Ulster-Scots. My mother’s family (the Muirheads) moved from Scotland to Cairncastle, County Antrim, many generations ago to farm the townland of Corkermain. My father’s maternal family came over with the Hamilton / Montgomery settlers and have remained in the Ards area ever since, while on his paternal line, we were weavers and flax hacklers. I have a huge interest in Ulster-Scots culture, literature and language and hope to promote Ulster-Scots in a very positive and enthusiastic way.
