The varied uses of Granite

As towns grew at the turn of the twentieth century there was a demand for square sets for use in the construction of roads.

The Mournes provided a source for granite which was mostly worked by hand using hammer and chisel.

Nowadays most of the work with granite is for tomb stones made with machine automated saws, and much of the black granite is shipped from South Africa.(Broadcast: 28th April 1976)
