S
is for…
St Elmo’s Fire
A generally continuous electrical discharge around elevated objects
such as wind vanes, ship’s masts etc or from aircraft in flight.
It is normally blue or green, but can appear white or violet. The
phenomenon is accompanied by a crackling sound and occurs when the
electrical field around the object is strong, e.g. when there is
a cumulonimbus cloud in the vicinity.
St Swithin's Day
A well known piece of weather lore is that if it rains on a
particular place on St Swithin’s day (15 July) then it will rain
on each of the following 40 days. However, there is no statistical
evidence to support this.
Scotch Mist
A combination of thick mist and drizzle (sometimes called "mizzle"),
so called because it is most commonly experienced in hilly areas
of Scotland, particularly the north and west in a moist, mild southwesterly
airstream.
Sheet Lightning
A lightning discharge, within a thunder cloud, in which there is
an apparent absence of a main channel (or 'fork') due to the obscuring
effect of the light.
