Title: Anti-social behaviour

Mercedes lives in a village in the North East where antisocial behaviour is a major problem.

Unfortunately, she has had far too much experience of it herself.

As a result of intimidation and vandalism, Mercedes now rarely leaves her house. If she does, it's never alone. Her home is heavily fortified and she has had to install CCTV cameras.

Mercedes feels that not enough is done for victims of antisocial behaviour. Many people are unable to move, because they can't sell their homes; some simply give up and abandon them. They are often afraid to speak up and, as silent victims, do not always receive the support they need.

I wouldn't have been able to endure this for a week, let alone years. Anyone who accepts this as normal behaviour is as bad as the perpetrators. I live quite near the village in question, and I'm amazed what goes on in Tony Blair's own constituency.

Ian, Newcastle
Teenagers these days are fearless. This makes people frightened to say anything for fear of agression. This makes them more fearless and so on and so forth. Unless parents teach them to respect other people and their property this will get much worse. We will be moving out of Newcastle to a more rural spot soon because we have a 6 month son and don't want him to grow up like this.

Andrew T, Gateshead
More Police patrols, CCTV camera's, better lighting, Youth Clubs and most of all strict punishment in and out of school. This to me is where the freedom to run riot stems as teachers and staff are restricted as to what punishment they can give. Good luck!

Dave W, Northumberland
I think it is an absolute disgrace that anybody should have to put up with these prats.

David, North East
Its obvious that those involved in this type of behaviour have no respect for others. perhaps we should stop respecting them. Put them to work fixing what they break, cleaning what they spray. Its about time we took back the places where we live from these people. If these people really have nothing to do, then once they commit an offence the state should take them under its wing and give them something to do. They should work for the state until they have re-paid their debt to the community. Any solution will not be easy but if we do nothing the situation will only get worse.

Corry, Canada

I believe that since she has the CCTV camera's it could be used to catch these hooligans... why has the gov allowed this to go on? In Canada, this would NOT be tolerated..... Best of luck Mercedes!

Gill C, Newcastle

One of the problems is that the vandals have never had to work or provide anything for themselves, if they did then they would have more respect for other people's property. The offenders should be made to repair the damage that they have caused and have a proportion of their benefit paid directly to the victim as compensation. The offenders are given too much, too easily and the victims are left to pick up the pieces.

Beverly, Seaton Delaval
this is rubbish! no offence but these are well common charvas as i only live about 2 miles away from this place and its the worst place possible. these are the the kind of people that go out and steel cars, drink on the street etc...... i dont no why there was a video made about them as there whats known as muck around our part.

GH, Gateshead
Anti social behaviour has been getting out of hand the last few years and seems to be on the rise. I'm not so sure all media attention helps any. People appear not to have any regard for citizens and police. There are no ground rules anymore. More community and police involvement and the need to get tough appears the only option.

John, Newcastle
Mike [comment below], your reactionary attitude is so unhelpful. What do you mean you have no sympathy for people suffering from anti-social behaviour? Where's your humanity? Nobody should have to suffer what the lady in this film has suffered. She did not bring it upon herself. You're entitled to your opinions about National Service etc, but to say you have no sympathy for people who suffer from anti-social behaviour makes you no better than the perpetrators. There are many factors creating this problem (unemployment, lack of education and aspirations, drugs, poverty, crime etc) and it's for the Government, local politicians, the Police and citizens like ourselves to sort it out. My sympathies go out to people trapped in such awful situations.

Mike
I, living many miles away from Tyneside, or any conurbation for that matter, have absolutely no sympathy for anybody these days suffering from this anti-social behaviour. For decades you all have allowed yobs and their female associates run riot. You did nothing to stop this, the 'do-gooders' not only allowed this to happen but actively encouraged it. You are now reaping what you have sowed. When I was young teenagers were kept under very tight control ending for lads in National Service. The worm has turned, now I laugh at these people suffering from yobs as they mocked and laughed at me when I forecast what the result WOULD BE! when it was stopped. I wish you all luck, by god you'll need it because, and here's another forecast and remember who said it - "YOU AINT SEE NOTHING YET!"

Sandra, Durham
Mercedes, my heart goes out to you and people in your situation. I don't know what the solution is, but I know that the situation is very, very wrong. Good luck to you!

Geoff, Darlington

Absolutely brilliant..about time people stood up to their human rights..why live in pain and fear behind closed doors..there are people out there that care about what is happening to the unlucky victims... lets make a stand and fight them back...
