Celebrate with a Spanish style fiesta of theatre, music, poetry and dance before Newcastle Playhouse and the Gulbenkian close their doors for a major renovation.

Northern Stage have previously adapted two of George Orwell's novels for the stage: Animal Farm and 1984.

During World War II, Orwell worked for the BBC, writing and monitoring propaganda. He was also a critic and journalist.

Homage to Catalonia will premiere at the West Yorkshire Playhouse before touring Paris and ending its tour in Barcelona as part of the Forum Barcelona 2004 festival.

As a last hurrah before the their home is re-modelled, northern stage present a two week festival of music, dance, theatre, art, poetry and photography celebrating Catalan traditions and culture.

Music plays an important part in the production

At the centre of the festival is the first-ever staging of Homage to Catalonia, completing northern stage ensemble's highly successful George Orwell trilogy.

Already selected by the Observer as one of top theatrical events to look for in 2004, Homage to Catalonia is being tipped as a possible award-winning piece of international drama.
