The Alnwick Garden changes throughout the year, reflecting the horticultural and natural beauty of the season.

In addition to the Garden's natural attraction, from the technicolour full bloom of high summer to the muted tones of slumbering winter foliage, visitors can also enjoy a variety of cultural and artistic works and activities.

Somewhere Out There

The Alnwick Garden summer programme for 2004 kicks off with a subdued, gentle site specific work titled Somewhere Out There by Newcastle based artist Chun-Chao Chiu.

During the Easter holiday period, visitors to the Garden were able to watch an artist in action as Chun Chao worked directly onto a 35 metre stretch of 6ft high hoarding, erected around the current building developments.

Born in Taiwan, Chun-Chao's work is influenced by both Chinese and Western culture.

Somewhere Out There began with a single and semi-erasable pencil line.

The repetitive action of applying layers of pencil to the hoarding has created a work that entwines simple lines to produce a complex presentation.

Chun-Chao is one of eight recipients of an Arts Council England North East, Spotlight Award under the decibel initiative.

Other art work in the grounds include the bronze 1958 sculpture Ascending Form by the renowned British artist Barbara Hepworth.

The magnificent bronze is on long term loan from the Arts Council.

Hepworth's sculpture is epitomises spirit and optimism of the late fifties; with just a hint to the liberating forces of new woman as the swinging 60s beckon.

Another favourite is a large decorative urn or cornucopia, supported by four very cheeky monkey's and topped by a wily fox.
