By Helen Turley

Newcastle is noted for its lack of small music venues. After the demise of the Riverside and Mayfair, bands pretty much have the choice of the venues such as the City Hall and Universities. These venues are miles out of the reach of new local performers.

Venue for new performers

Dismayed by this, Simma, founder of the Acoustic Circus came up with the perfect idea. New performers fear that they will welcomed on stage by an audience of two people. But if six performers play on the same night and each performer guarantees that at least ten mates will come along you have your own ready-made audience. So two years ago the once monthly Acoustic Circus was born.

Simma has been performing for over eight years and is so enthusiastic about the voluntary organisation that creates Acoustic Circus. The Bridge staff are also 110% supportive and with this combination of devotion the night is a winner.

What I discovered at The Bridge was a unique night, a blend of talented individuals showcasing their astounding skills.

The Penny Sweets began the night with an distinctive mix of haunting vocals and strings.

Great talent on display

Next up was James Hammill. He has an astounding voice and he had the audience mesmerised within minutes of walking on stage. James, a superb songwriter/performer overflowing with charisma and talent, David Gray better watch his back.

Simma, Acoustic Circus founder, performed an impressive set. He is a passionate performer who loves to communicate with the audience between his catchy rhythmic melodies.

My highlight of the night was Gladstone. Gladstone's music is a gorgeous harmonious mix of gutsy vocals and guitar.

Finally The Medium took to the stage. John and Ben have helped the Circus become the success it is today. The have regularly performed and have become one of the most popular acts. Their rhythmical tunes had the audience captivated.

A bargain night out

The Circus is a night where anyone with talent, commitment and a desire to perform can get a gig. The Acoustic Circus is rumoured to be booked solid until next August.

With a £2.50 door charge, this is bargain night out, Newcastle’s best-kept secret. This is THE showcase for new musical talent on Tyneside.

Check out acoustic Circus’ website for regular updates and gig information.

The next Acoustic Circus is on Wednesday 04 December. The Christmas party will have around 10 acts and is not to be missed. Get there early as it’s going to be busy.
