Birtley Town receives top honour

Birtley Town Football Club has been recognised by the Football Association for the quality of its management and coaching.

The club has been awarded the Charter Standard, an award only given by the FA to clubs that reach the highest standard of professionalism.

Following the award, the club hopes to secure funding for new changing facilities and floodlights. If successful, the funding could amount to over £250,000.

Club spokesperson, Paul Magnay said: “We have become one of only 3% of clubs in the UK to achieve the award and only the third club in the Durham FA area to receive Community Club status – the highest level of award available. It’s worth a huge amount to the young players and their families."

Fixtures fall foul of the weather

Heavy snowfall, wind, rain and other weather problems have forced many junior football matches to be postponed.

So that means we may not have as many results, tables or match reports as usual. The BBC Tyne team does our best to make sure we publish these, but remember, we can only publish the information you send us!

West Brom Swoop for Cramlington Pair

Two members of the highly successful Cramlington Juniors Football Club have signed scholarship agreements with First Division promotion chasers West Bromwich Albion.

The pair, striker Stuart Nicholson from Cramlington and left midfielder Ben Pringle, 15, from Whitley Bay came to the attention of Scouts at West Brom after performing well for Cramlington. They were then invited for a weeks trial at the Club.

On the other hand Ben will join the Club after completing his examinations and leaving school in the summer. Ben has been tracked by a number of Clubs including Celtic, Huddersfield, Scunthorpe and West Ham United. He also plays for Northumberland Under 16's.

Charity Match to be held in Hunter's honour

Montagu and North Fenham B.C. have arranged a charity match between Montagu and Gosforth Juniors under 18s

This will be held at the Newcastle Blue Star football ground on Sat 24 April 2004 with a 7pm K.O.

The match is in memory of William Hunter, a very promising young goalkeeper with a very bright future ahead of him, who was tragically killed in a road accident in Dec 2001 (aged 16) near the Newcastle Blue Star's ground.

Williams parents, Tanya and Bill, together with the help of Montagu, have set up a fund for all monies raised in these games and other fund raising events, to provide
specialist coaching for young goalkeepers in the local area.

Newcastle win the cup

Newcastle Women's football club showed their more famous neighbours at St James' Park the way by winning a European Football Trophy at a tournament in Lloret del Mar, just down the coast from Barcelona.

The seniors eventually won the final 5-0 (funnily enough, against Newcastle Womens FC's under 21 team), but both teams put on a proud display and were fine ambassadors for Newcastle.

Who says Geordie football lacks strength in depth?
