FACTS

About two million tonnes of presents are given on Christmas Day.

Christmas carols were banned between 1649 and 1660 in England by Oliver Cromwell who thought that Christmas should be a solemn day.

Christmas starts on 25 December and ends 12 days later on 6 January with the Feast of Epiphany.

All I want for Xmas is...

1. A hangover cure - Avoid alcoholic drinks the night before...(erm we didn't mean that, it's Christmas -Ed). For those who plan on overindulging why not check out our hangover cure tips.

2. A chat-up line - If you haven't read our cheesy chat up lines then don't blame us if all you pull this Christmas is a cracker.
3. Something great on the box - There's plenty of festive shows to choose from - take your pick from BBC television.
4. An on-line Christmas Greeting - Sending Christmas cards is just so yesterday. Discover which of your friends are hip, see if they've sent you an e-greeting courtesy of BBC Tyne - add your own whilst you are checking!

5. A shop - Haven't had enough of shopping yet? Perhaps you need to escape the relatives or just fancy getting out to bag a bargain in the sales. But before you grab your coat, check out which centres are open.

Metro Centre, Gateshead

The Galleries, Washington

Eldon Square, Newcastle

Dalton Park, Co Durham

The Bridges, Sunderland

Royal Quays, North Shields

6. Doctor, dentist, optician or pharmacy -
