Family birdwatching.
Birdwatching can be innocent fun for all the family
The RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch is the biggest birdwatch in the world. The 2003 birdwatch has just finished, but why not get practising for next year's event? Best of all, you can do it from the comfort of your own home!

FACTS

The morning is the best time to look, when the birds are out and about feeding after a cold winter night.

Robins can live to the ripe old age of 10 and it often seems that they hop across the lawn or pick up crumbs from the windowsill without a care in the world. However, the reality is that mortality rates are high and barely 25% of robins make it past their first birthday.

If you're after something entertaining, educational and above all cheap to keep the family occupied, birdwatching could be the answer.

With a well-positioned bird table or feeder, you can bring the birds to your window to give you hours of fun and free entertainment.

Not only is the Big Garden Birdwatch jolly good fun, it also helps the RSPB keep tabs on our local birdwatch and find out which species is on the up, and which is at risk every year.

Robin
Cock Robin's been busy this year - no wonder he looks so chirpy!

Take the humble Robin for instance. Their distinctive red breasts and cheeky personality make them one of Britain's favourite birds. Last year's Big Garden Birdwatch discovered that the Robin is going strong with over 4.5m pairs of Robins breeding in the UK.

That puts the Robin in at number 10 in Britain's top ten birds, which is released by the RSPB at the end of every Birdwatch.

This year's Big Garden Birdwatch has just finished for 2003, and the results will be out soon.
