The changing faces of NUFC

Four seasons and six managers - it's been a turbulent few years at Newcastle United to say the least. Take a look back at the comings and goings at St James' Park with our timeline.

On 1 April 2005, Alan Shearer signed a new player-coach contract which was to be the start of his managerial career. Since then, NUFC has changed dramatically.

June 2009

8 June: Newcastle United are put up for sale with an asking price of £100m.

May 2009

24 May: After a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, Newcastle United are relegated to the Championship.

April 2009

1 April: This is no April Fool - Magpie fans can't quite believe it as Alan Shearer is named manager of Newcastle United until the end of the 2008-09 season.

March 2009

16 March: Caretaker manager Chris Hughton says Joe Kinnear is expected to return from sick leave and resume his position on either 11 April or 18 April. Little did he know...

Ashley changed his mind about selling the club

February 2009

7 February: Toon fans are shocked as Joe Kinnear is rushed to hospital. He later undergoes a triple heart bypass.

December 2008

28 December: Owner Mike Ashley finally takes NUFC off the market and says he is "committing to the club".

14 December: An early Christmas present - Portsmouth 0 Newcastle 3.

November 2008

29 November: To the disappointment of fans, Shearer rejects an approach by Joe Kinnear to join the club. This is not the first approach to "Wor Alan" and will not be the last.

The "Messiah" returned - for a while

28 November: Kinnear is confirmed as manager until the end of the season.

September 2008

A busy month as Keegan the "Messiah" leaves (again) and Ashley puts the club up for sale. Joe Kinnear is named as interim boss and the club denies reports that Shearer has been sacked as their ambassador.

January 2008

All hail King Kev! Keegan the "Messiah" returns as Allardyce leaves by "mutual agreement" after just 24 games.

June 2007

7 June: Chairman Freddy Shepherd sells his shares to Mike Ashley, giving him ownership of NUFC.

May 2007

The turnstile moves again and Roeder is out, Allardyce in.

May 2006

16 May: Glenn Roeder is appointed as permanent manager and Shearer named as the club's ambassador.

April 2006

22 April: Shearer retires after tearing a knee ligament in a heart-wrenching derby clash with Sunderland. He plays a final testimonial match, doing an emotional lap of honour.

February 2006

2 February: Graeme Souness is sacked and Glenn Roeder appointed as caretaker manager. Alan Shearer appointed as assistant.

April 2005

1 April: Shearer signs a one-year contract as "player-coach".
