Arabella Arnott

The actor says the best thing about her job is being paid to pretend.

Arabella Arnott information panel

I was born in Ipswich but grew up in Wales in a commune. I moved to Newcastle in 1995 to start a theatre company.

What are your hopes and fears for 2009?

I am hoping to have a busy and successful year doing lots of acting. I am hoping for a gorgeous summer and lots of sunshine. I'm not especially fearful.

What's the best thing about your job?

I get paid to pretend! Also, I love it when I have a make-up artist!

What makes you angry?

People who drop litter! Why? Just put it in the bin! People who smoke in their cars when their kids are in the back, that was just normal behaviour in the 70s and I remember how sick it used to make me feel, there's really no excuse these days.

What couldn't you live without?

Tea, I like Lady Grey best.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I've only ever wanted to be an actor.

What keeps you awake at night?

The police helicopters always hovering around with their big bright searchlight and the kids' Harry Potter story CDs.

What are your bad habits?

Jelly Babies.

What's the best thing about you?

I'm hardly ever ill.

What's your proudest achievement?

My children. They are brilliant.

Where do you go when you want to think/be alone?

In Wales at my mum's there's an amazing copper beech tree which I used to climb up when I wanted to be on my own, I'd sit there for hours. Now I go out for a long run with music, I've got a 10-mile route which takes me all the way along the Quayside and up through Jesmond Dene and across the moor, it's good to be outside.

What are your ambitions?

I want to swim across Bala Lake in North Wales with both my amazing children. I tried to swim it when I was 11 but couldn't stop thinking about the big fish and had to give up.

What single change would improve your life most?

A little more sunshine.
