Michael Fitzpatrick

Michael enjoys his job working on a platform in the North Sea but misses his family when he is away.

Michael Fitzpatrick information panel

Worked on an oil/gas platform in Norway North Sea for last 26 years. Fluent in Norwegian. Thirty two years offshore. Work for Northumberland social services in free period as task centred day carer.

What are your hopes and fears for 2009?

Hope that we will have peace in Palestine which will go a long way to reducing terrorism. Fear that it is too late to reverse global warming, as the polar caps melt the release of frozen methane will tip the balance.

What's the best thing about your job?

The job is very dynamic, new problems to solve every day. The friendship I have is like an extended family with everyone concerned about each other. When you are home on leave your work responsibilities are someone else's problem.

What's the worst thing about your job?

Air travel, waiting in queues at airports. 548kg carbon footprint round trip to Norway. Working Christmas/New Year, being away from family.

What makes you angry?

People not indicating while driving. People not respecting that we all are different. People who are opinionated and won't listen.

What do you love/hate about where you live?

Love Northumberland and Newcastle, the best of both worlds. Traffic queues.

Describe yourself in three words.

Positive, funny, caring.

What was your first job?

Selling ice cream from a seaside kiosk. You sold a lot of cones to collect £100 in 1971.

Who would you most enjoy being stuck in a lift with?

Richard Wilson.

What's the best thing about you?

Humour. Since being the school clown I've found what a tonic you can be to people around you. A teacher once said to me that it was better to stand there and look stupid than open your mouth and convince people.

What's your happiest memory?

Growing up in a loving, caring happy family environment. Eating together at the dinner table.

What single change would improve your life most?

Early retirement would remove the stress of travelling and trying to catch connecting flights.
