Alison Ellerbrook

The mother of a young daughter is enjoying running her own business making her own cushions and lampshades.

Alison Ellerbrook information panel

Lived in various parts of the North East since I was 14 years old. Following a variety of jobs realised I couldn't answer to anyone except myself and started my own business making my own cushions and lampshades which I sell online. Married for six years, I now have a 21-month-old little girl who I'm at home full time with alongside running my business.

What are your hopes and fears for 2009?

On a personal level I hope to develop my business and to continue enjoying spending time with my daughter in her pre-school years. On a wider level I hope that the economic situation improves and that we get a change of government. I fear that this country is going to become an even more depressing place to live.

What's the best thing about your job?

Being self-employed I love being my own boss, having the flexibility to fit my work in around my family and to be able to use my creative side.

What's the worst thing about your job?

I never ever have any time off, my laptop is like another limb.

What makes you angry?

Filling in forms and unnecessary bureaucracy, driving in rush hour, bad customer service, nanny state, political correctness.

Describe yourself in three words.

Creative, independent, loyal.

What couldn't you live without?

Laptop, tea, family.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A journalist.

What was your first job?

My first proper job was as cabin crew.

Who would you most enjoy being stuck in a lift with?

Barack Obama.

What are your bad habits?

Biting my fingernails, being impatient, worrying too much.

Where do you go when you want to think/be alone?

I go and have a long soak in a bubble bath.
