Sean Harris

Meet Sean, a history teacher with a sense of humour who likes pork scratchings but doesn't care for football, although he's been told he looks a bit like Ryan Giggs!

Sean Harris: Age, 26; Location, Killingworth; Status, married; Job, teacher

I live in Killingworth with my wife Jen. I am described by my peers as fun to be with and fun to look at. I have a passion for films, faith and food.

I am a Christian and attend church in Jesmond. It has been said that I look like Ryan Giggs. Ironically, however, I cannot and will not play football!

What are your hopes and fears for 2009?

That credit crunching will continue to chew my savings. (Fear)

Sean Harris

That my grey hair will continue to increase by the day. (Fear)

That many people will come to see how much Christianity has to offer. (Hope)

That I might find the time and money to begin to start a family. (Hope)

That teachers will be given a huge pay rise and receive worldwide recognition for doing such a great job with so little time! (Hope)

What's the best thing about your job?

Being able to work with the inquisitive and complex minds of teenagers.

Being able to work in a large staff team who all encounter similar challenges, tensions and burdens.

Being entertained by the often witty remarks of teenagers.

Being able to make a lifelong impact on hundreds of young people each day.

The holidays… of course!

What's the worst thing about your job?

The occasional grumpy teenager who takes his/ her bad day out on you.

The occasional grumpy teacher who takes his/ her bad day out on you.

Ink on your tie/ shirt (occupational hazard!)

Marking book, marking books and marking books!

What makes you angry?

Delayed trains and other belated methods of transport.

Tuna!

Religious extremism and religious hypocrisy.

Bad drivers.

Call centres.

What do you love/hate about where you live?

The North East is a fantastic part of the country. I love the fact that Northumberland is on our doorstep and such an unspoiled part of England.

"During school holidays I have recurring dreams about being in the classroom and teaching students."

Sean Harris

Lovely walks and cycle routes and lots of fantastic places to eat and drink.

The Killingworth Arms is one of my favourite pubs and places to eat/ greet/ meet.

Chavs who keep destroying bus shelters. Delayed buses. Cold winds and freezing cold winds.

Describe yourself in three words.

Educational, enthusiastic and enigmatic.

If you were making a time capsule what would you put in it?

Nintendo Wii.
My Bible.
Myself (I guess that's the history teacher in me right?)

What couldn't you live without?

My wife.
My Bible.
Sense of humour.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Smart, sexy and sophisticated (yet only one of the three have been accomplished!)

I wanted to work with young people in some capacity. I also wanted to move away from Lancaster and travel the world (this stopped when I got to Northumberland – I didn't want to go anywhere else!)

What do you think about your family?

My wife and I are very happily married and we are close to our family and think the world of them. Every family member has something that makes me tick, no doubt I have inherited their character traits also!

What was your first job?

My first job involved being paid to hand out leaflets on Morecambe promenade. It was low paid, cold and I would often just stick the leaflets to car window screens to hurry up the task!

What keeps you awake at night?

My wife occasionally gets cramp and when she does she is quite quick to let anyone else in her close vicinity know about it! This definitely wakes me up and keeps me awake at night.

During school holidays I also have recurring dreams about being in the classroom and teaching students. Usually in the dreams I have lots of students being noisy and chaotic – needless to say that this does NOT become a reality when I return to work!

Who would you most enjoy being stuck in a lift with?

Moses from the Bible – he would part the doors like he did the Red Sea.

What are your bad habits?

Eating pork scratchings – regularly.
Picking my feet.
Cracking bad jokes.
Not keeping in touch with friends.

What are your good habits?

Cracking good jokes.
Making sure I spend time with my family.
Praying for my friends, family and students.

What's the best thing about you?

According to a colleague, "You are sometimes funny and make people smile." Another colleague says, "You have an extremely optimistic outlook on life and a vibrant personality." Disclaimer: Please note that I did not bribe either of these colleagues!

What's your proudest achievement?

Marrying a fantastic wife and managing to survive my first months of teaching (to date).

What's your greatest regret?

Not taking the time to consider the regrets I have in life.

Where do you go when you want to think/be alone?

My study.
Holy Island.

What are your ambitions?

To be an outstanding teacher.
To live a long life and get to heaven.

What's your worst memory?

Throwing up during an English lesson and seeing it hit the bag of a girl I fancied! I was in Year 7 at the time and it proved to be one of my most embarrassing moments from high school. Furthermore, I think any chance of the girl in question and I hooking up went straight out of the window!

What's your happiest memory?

My wedding day. Being together with my wife, family and friends and receiving an abundance of cards and gifts.

What single change would improve your life most?

Having more time in the day.

If you ruled the world what would you change?

My car and wardrobe would have to change immediately.

Young people would be given seats in Parliament – they are leaders of today and tomorrow.

More money would be spent on education so students had greater access to innovative technologies and resources.

I think I would change my identity and become a super-hero dedicated to fighting injustice and crime!
