Great North Run - your storiesYou are in: Tyne > Great North Run > Great North Run - your stories > Mum is an inspiration ![]() Debbie, Alex and Shirley Robertson Mum is an inspirationBy contributor Debbie Robertson Debbie Robertson, from North Shields, and her family will be taking part in the Great North Run weekend in 2008 raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The whole Robertson family will be involved in the Great North Run this year in aid of the MS Society. Alex Robertson, my four-year-old son, is running in the Mini GNR pulling along his daddy, Graham - who is a keen cyclist, rather than a sprinter!
I am running the GNR after taking up running to lose weight, get fit and keep up with my growing little boy. In total I have lost six stone and dropped four dress sizes, all through healthy eating and running in the last two years. We're doing these runs for the charity as my mum Shirley Robertson has MS and is an absolute inspiration for us. Truly inspirationalMum is now 66 and has had MS since she was a child. Over the years this cruel condition has progressed, forcing her to give up her job and affecting her more and more until now she has severe mobility problems and can only leave the house in a wheelchair. She is truly inspirational in that no matter how bad things have ever been she has remained positive and strong with a wicked sense of humour and continues to be a wonderful mum. She's my best friend and a fantastic gran to my son. She props herself on her walking frame to wildly nudge a football with her "good" leg so she can play football with him, and happily spends hours with him firing his imagination through making models, drawing, stories and games. So, in honour of mum I will be running the GNR (after running it in 2007 - a bit too early in my running experience and swearing never again as it was so painful!). I will be putting in the hours of training and for every blister, groggy plod along the North East coast early in the morning, know that the whole family is doing it for a great cause.
