Rutherford Head Success

Rowers from around the country came to Tyneside to compete in a challenging course on the River Tyne.

Tyne Rowing Club brought the year to a close by staging another exciting time trial race on Saturday 1 December.

The Rutherford Head of the River has been in existence for 41 years and this year attracted over 170 boats and 800 competitors to the banks of the River Tyne for what was a very enjoyable and successful day.

Crews from as far afield as Bradford, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh and Dumfries made the trip to Newburn to take part in the race.

There were two divisions – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The race took place over a 5,000 metre course between Scotswood Bridge and Newburn Bridge with each crew rowing in succession up the river.

Their times were recorded and the winners were awarded tankards as a memento of their success.

All of the eight crews entered by Tyne Rowing Club into the event rowed well and, in particular, there was an excellent performance from Tyne Rowing Club's women's novice eight who won their category, beating 11 other crews.

Tyne men's veteran C eight also won their category, seven seconds ahead of their nearest rivals.

Dave Swan, who was captain of Tyne Rowing Club in 1979 and 1980, died suddenly last year. His wife, Jennifer, donated a trophy in memory of him.

The David Barron Swan trophy was awarded for the first time for the fastest men's eight of the day. Durham University were the first club to win the trophy.

New members

Tyne Rowing Club are looking forward to taking part in many head races and regattas over the forthcoming months, at a local and national level. The next local race will be the Tyne Head on 16 February 2008.

Tyne Rowing Club are always looking for new members. If you have never rowed before, you can join the new Learn to Row courses.
