The CSV Action Desk at BBC Radio Newcastle is working in partnership with Recyke y'Bike community workshop in Byker to encourage you to clean up your old bikes and get them back on the roads and cycle paths of the North East. Donate, recycle, reuse
 | | Teaching bicycle maintenance |
Recyke y'Bike takes in donated bikes from members of the public and recycles them for use by priority groups such as the long-term unemployed, the homeless and those with mental health problems. Most bikes can be taken in, fixed, and made as good as new. Those which can't be fully recycled are stripped down for parts to help fix other bikes and any scrap metal left over is recycled or used by artists and community groups to create sculptures. The project has been a great success so far. It has just shipped a load of unwanted mountain bikes to Africa to enable people like doctors and nurses in remote villages to travel further and help more people. So that bike that's gathering dust in your garage could really be put to better use! Get involved | "Most bikes can be taken in, fixed and can become as good as new." | |
We are looking for more people to get involved with the project. If you have your own bike you can take it down to the workshop and refurbish it yourself. You don't need to have any previous experience as you will be trained in bike maintenance. And if you already have skills in cycle maintenance we are keen to hear from you too, as volunteers are needed to help fix some of the other bikes so they can be saved from landfill sites. If you are interested in learning more about how you can support Recyke y'Bike - either by donating a bike, joining a bike maintenance course, or volunteering a little of your time to help out the charity - contact the CSV Action Desk: - Call Jen on 0191 221 2815
