Send us your pictures...

Fancy sharing your photos with the rest of the world? Send them to us and we'll add them to our galleries for everyone to see. Just follow these handy hints to make sure your photos are what we need.

The basics...

If you have a photograph you would like to show off, simply e-mail it to us.

Make sure you include your name and tell us a little bit about the picture itself, such as:

  • where and when the photo was taken
  • who the people in the picture are
  • why you took the photo

You don't have to include all of these details but it is always nice to know what your picture is about. Please don't type in capitals though as it makes the text difficult to read and correct for publication.

Picture sizes and formats

Ideally you should send just one picture per e-mail.

If you do send more than one picture at a time, make sure you make it clear in your e-mail which caption goes with each picture.

No image you send us should be more than 1MB (1024KB) in size. Your e-mail program should tell you the size of your image when you attach it.

Ideally the pixel size of an image should be no less than 640x480px - though we can still use some images smaller than this.

Finally, make sure you send us your picture as a jpg file - that means the file name will have the extension .jpg after it on a PC. (Mac users - please add the .jpg extension.)

Photo essays

People always say a picture is worth a thousand words, and it's true that they are a great way of telling a story... So if you really want to show off your talents why not have a go at making a photo "essay"?

Pick whatever subject you like – as long as it's in or around Tyneside and Northumberland or has a link to the area - then take a series of pictures which tell your story and write a few words to go with each.

Interested? Take a peek at these photo essays on the theme "My Northumbria" to see how it works, then read on...

It's a good idea to plan your story before you start taking pictures. Think about the type of photographs you could take and aim to take a variety of shots from different positions - you might get a better picture sometimes if you kneel or find a position to look down from.

Your story

The completed essay will ideally have around 15 photos, but you can send us more to choose from.

Try to include a good opening photograph which will introduce your subject to readers and make sure you have permission from anyone pictured.

Finally, each picture will need a caption. Who, what, why, where and when is a good place to start, but quotations from any people pictured would really bring the essay to life. And don't worry about writing a lot - about 40 words per picture is a good guide.

If you have any questions or want to pitch a few ideas, please get in touch with us by email.
