Re-live Owen's arrival

When Michael Owen was unveiled as a Newcastle United player, BBC Radio Newcastle and BBC Tyne made sure you didn't miss a thing. Listen again to the press conference, hear the fans reaction, and check out the picture gallery.

The most expensive signing in Newcastle United's history was unveiled on Wednesday 30 August,  at St. James' Park, when Michael Owen was presented to the eager press and fans.

"We've bought a top class guy. We've really done the business today. "

"I've seen the reception out there, and I just wish there was a game tomorrow", the England marksman told the room full of journalists, as the crowds chanted his name in the stands outside.

Sitting between Chairman Freddy Shepherd and Manager Graeme Souness, Newcastle's latest star signing looked comfortable in his new surroundings. "I've signed for Newcastle ahead of the others, so I'm delighted about that."

Souness was equally pleased. "We've bought a top class guy. We've really done the business today".

Outside, the fans couldn't contain their excitement. Newcastle fan James McKeith said "It's a great signing. We should shoot up the league". Another fan, Vic Steele, described it as a "fantastic boost for the club."

BBC Radio Newcastle broadcast live from St. James' Park as the ex-Real Madrid and Liverpool star made his introduction to his adoring public.
