Howes Fishing

Railton Howes give us the lowdown on the experts from his angling programme that can be heard on BBC Newcastle as well as being available to "listen again" online.

Howes Fishing is one of BBC Newcastle's longest running programmes. We started in the mid-eighties with five minutes into the Friday sports preview sharing our time with the footballers, cricketers and the athletes, then we were given our very own angling programme, half an hour long. In it we cover game, coarse and sea fishing mainly in the North East but sometimes we do travel further afield.

I started fishing when I was about ten, my Dad took me to Whittledene and on my first outing was delighted to catch a brown trout. It wasn't big but I was so proud of my catch, I took it home and my grandmother cooked it for me! From that day, I've been hooked on the sport.

Nowadays, it's mainly trout fishing but I do enjoy the coarse side of the sport. I've taken many a pike from waters in the Lake District, Scotland, and of course this part of the world.

For me, fishing is a very relaxing though sometimes quite a taxing sport, pitting your wits against a cunning fish can be an art in itself. To be in the country, at odds with nature really cleanses the mind. Try it! Like me, you could be hooked for life!

Don Coe

The experts

Our angling experts are all experts in the true sense of the word, Don Coe for example, now fisheries manager for Northumbrian Water started fishing at the tender age of five, encouraged by his late father Bill. Bill, was the voice of game fishing for some years in the early days of the programme.

When Don left full time education he went into car sales, but his heart really was in fishing so worked for his dad in Lanchester running a business selling, yes, you've guessed it, fishing tackle. Don is a very keen angler, in fact, rather like a stick of rock, if you cut him in two, you'd probably read the word fish!!!

Now, Mark Armstrong is another keen angler on the Howes Fishing team, Mark looks after the rivers and the private stillwaters in the area.

Rather like Don, Mark has been connected with angling for years and works in a tackle shop in Gateshead. You see, he just loves chatting to the anglers and what better place than a tackle shop. Mark is a keen all round angler, but his favourite method is casting the dry fly into his favourite River Derwent for a grayling or a wild brown trout.

Sam Harris, our sea fishing expert is one of the founder members of the Tynemouth Angling club. From 1970 - 1987 he moved into retail selling, yes, you've guessed it, fishing tackle.

Sam has contributed his sea angling expertise for more than 30 years to BBC Newcastle, writes for the local evening paper and numerous angling publications. His favourite sport now is Big Game Fishing in the Indian Ocean... when he gets the chance that is!

Last but by no means least, David Hall, our coarse expert, David, born in Hazelrigg in 1949 has studied freshwater fish, angling and natural history for many years.

He acts as fisheries officer for the Tyne Anglers Alliance, an amalgamation of coarse angling clubs in our area. He also sits on advisory panels for the Environment agency and Northumbrian Water, advise on anything fishy.
