Sir Bobby Robson
Sir Bobby has managed both teams

A Sporting chance?

Newcastle United's next opponent in the UEFA Cup used to be managed by Sir Bobby Robson, who in turn influenced the careers of Luis Figo and Jose Mourinho. No wonder there's a good relationship between the clubs!

Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle have enjoyed good relations ever since Sir Bobby Robson was manager. Although Bobby was controversially sacked in 1992, the fans and the club have always thought highly of him.

The two clubs have played a host of friendly matches and Sporting were even cheeky enough to phone Freddy Shepherd seconds after the draw was announced to ask if on-loan Hugo Viana could play in the match.

It was testament to the relationship between the two clubs that the answer was 'a polite no' rather than a verbal rocket!

While Sir Bobby was manager of Sporting Lisbon, he was introduced to his interpreter, a man called Jose Mourinho. The two men got on well, and he ended up as Bobby's assistant coach at Barcelona... the rest is history!

Another promising link to Sporting Lisbon is that Newcastle beat them on their way to lifting the Inter-City Fairs Cup in 1968-69. This was the predecessor of the UEFA cup and the only European trophy Newcastle have won in their history. The signs are good.

City Info

Located: West coast of Portugal

Lisbon
Lisbon - A nice place to be

History: Lisbon emerged during the early 12th century and ranks as one of the world's oldest cities.

Lisbon's high point was during the 15th century, when Portugal played a big part in the colonisation of the West Indies and huge amounts of money poured into the town.

Unfortunately a huge earthquake in 1755 destroyed most of the city. It was rebuilt by the Marquês de Pombal.

Today, Lisbon is a city of contrasts, still maintaining the marks of its early history along with a rich cultural mix of immigrants from former colonies.

Population: 535,740 in the city itself; 1,835,380 if you include the suburbs.

Language: Portuguese

Currency: Euro

Food and Drink: Seafood is popular, especially in Lisbon. Typical Portuguese dishes include sopa de marisco (shellfish soup cooked and served with wine), caldo verde (green soup made with finely shredded green kale leaves in broth) and bacalhau (dried cod, cooked in over 100 different ways). Caldeirada is a fish stew with as many as nine kinds of fish, cooked with onions and tomatoes. Portugal’s sweet pastries (available in most cafés) are also worth a try.

Portuguese table wines are good value. The most popular regional names are Dão for red wines and Bucelas and Colares for white wines. Sparkling rosé wines are mostly produced for export. Portuguese brandies are also good; the best are produced around Oporto, where Port wines come from. There are no licensing hours.

Must see:  Apart from the Jose Alvalade Stadium, check out the Alfama which is one of the oldest quarters of the city.  Since it largely survived the earthquake of 1755, the area still retains much of its original layout.

i think if shearer injured they should look to the youth team because there is a big lad called ryan peacock who is pacey aggressive and has a eye for goal

ryan peacock
i support newcastle but i think we will lose 2-1 but still go through on away goals

David Robinson
I think it will be a 1 - 1 draw, but it will be a difficult match for us. Keep ya fingers crossed lads.

Keith Weetman
Hopefully we could win but probably one goal to nil

Gary Jackaman
As a Newcastle fan, I hope we get an one nil win. If Alan Shearer is playing, then I am confident that Alan will get us the goal we need to ensure we qualify for the next round. Saying that, if Shearer was to become injured, then I would be content with a draw as long as we defend. We cannot afford any more errors.

Nuno
Sporting players beat United's in every position of the field, you'll see. Watch the game, enjoy our football and don't be too sorry!

sporto
newcastle better watch out sporting r no push over having studyed there last 3 games they've got 2 sharp strikers and thier defence causes all problems for any strikers around

Adam Craggs
Sporting are a good quality football team but without Hugo i cant see them beating us, especially with the likes of dyer bowyer robert etc picked up there game in recent weeks 1-0 to the toon in lisbon 2-0 to the toon at home

Jonathon Sadler
Sporting are a lovely football side with many technically gifted players, however the magpies will probably be too physically strong over the two legs.
