DJ's at the decks
Superstar DJs come out of the bedroom!

FREENESS

If you're a superstar Bedroom DJ, an electro-pop knob twiddling whizz kid, a beatmaker, singer or MC; Freeness is the event for you.

If you've ever fancied hearing your music being played out at a cutting edge club night, to be enjoyed by a new and appreciative audience, come along to Freeness in Newcastle, as part of its UK tour.

The Freeness Team

At a Freeness event, you'll also get the opportunity to meet other creative music makers and people in the industry, and maybe (just maybe), get your original music featured on the official Freeness CD compilation which will be distributed for free in Summer ’05.

What is FREENESS?

For a start, Freeness is not an X- Factor cum Fame Academy cum Pop Idol talent fest, pushing discernable talent onto a Pavlovian audience.

Freeness does exactly what is says on the tin – freedom of expression, freedom to define your identity, and it’s all free of charge!

Earlier this year, British artist Chris Ofili (the Turner Prize winning artists who utilised elephant dung in high art), announced the launch of Freeness, a groundbreaking project aimed at modern music makers of African, Caribbean, Asian and Chinese origin as well as people making music that represents elements of black and Asian culture.

"To be creative, may mean to fall outside of these categories and Freeness is aimed at these artists. "
ICEBOX

Freeness  is a springboard for talented producers and musical innovators from across England, providing an opportunity for creative expression outside the confines of the commercial music industry.

Chris Ofili on Freeness

“I couldn't believe it when I saw the term "urban" used for the first time.

To define the sort of music that someone might make by their ethnic background... I think there's something deeply wrong with that."

"Freeness is a not-for-profit venture which aims to give musicians a chance to be heard outside the mainstream. From Playstation wizards to Midi magicians, from the classically trained to the wild and cacophonous, this country contains a variety of sounds and musical stories.

"Freeness will look outside the pigeon holes, unearth the hidden gems in our communities and place them in the spotlight.

Show and Tell (and listen)

Come along on to THE FOUNDATION night club on Melbourne Street, Newcastle, Wednesday 9 March, between 6pm and 9pm to register your track and we will play your tune during the music session between 9pm and 2am.

A CD compilation featuring a selection of tracks from the tour will be released and distributed for free during Summer 05.

Freeness is the first project of Chris Ofili's ICEBOX initiative, in collaboration with CDR and Blacktronica with support from decibel, Arts Council England.
