Directing at one of Newcastle’s best known amateur theatres might be a scary task for some…but not for Andrew Craggs!

People’s Theatre, Stephenson Road, Heaton

When:

Tuesday 21 - Saturday 25 September at 7:30pm each evening.

Tickets:

Andrew, one of the People Theatre’s newest directors has recently returned to Newcastle from Cumbria where he studied a BA in Performing Arts although he’s been involved at the theatre previous to this.

"The play is quite real - an observant, witty take on restaurant life "

“I joined the theatre about five years ago where I starred in After Easter by Ann Devlin. Since then I have participated in 16 plays in five years.”

Andrew is currently directing the wickedly humorous Shakers Restirred, by John Godber and Jane Thornton, which gives a brief glimpse of reality behind a bar from hell through the lives of waitresses Carol, Adele, Nicky and Mel.

The play has a feeling of déjà vu for Andrew who previously worked in the restaurant and club business for ten years. He says:  “The play is quite real - an observant, witty take on restaurant life that’s not afraid to shock or be silly.”

This particular adaptation of the reality of Pina Coladas is “bang up to date both on style and presentation” Andrew adds.

Andrew has also had success on the professional stage, recently directing Lunch by Steven Berkoff at Newcastle’s Live Theatre.

So what’s been the most difficult thing directing Shakers Restirred? Andrew says,  “You’ve got to remember you’re working closely with people giving up their time to the benefit of the play. It’s different to professional theatre where people are paid and have to do it!”.
