Walk the Wall: Monday |

| The
wall's that way! |

Did
the Romans get bacon sandwiches and pizza to fuel their long treks?
Well, Paul and Ian are certainly being kept well fed as they continue
their Walk the Wall challenge.

The
sun came out again as Paul and Ian surveyed the Corbridge Roman
site for the first full day of their walk along Hadrian's Wall.
It's not exactly on the wall, but was an important set of buildings
at the time of the Roman invasion.

It has
some remarkable remains, but is sadly often missed by those following
the wall.
The 'lads' reported no blisters from their early treks, and were excited
to, at last see some examples of Roman life.
With curator Mandy Kennedy they explored the remains of the barracks,
Headquarters, and granaries. Then admired the Corbridge lion, discovered
in the nearby river.
But they were enthralled by Ruth Hicken from Textiles Through The
Ages, and Alex Croom from Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum in South Shields.
The ladies explained about the clothes that were worn at the time,
which Paul and Ian have been sampling in recent days. And described
how basic materials were woven to create cloth.

Lots of
people came along to meet the team, and many came armed with food.
The Lion Hotel made two trips, one with bacon sandwiches, and a second
with Pizza, having discovered Ian was a vegetarian.
It was also a chance to link-up with BBC Radio Cumbria's team, walking
from the West coast towards Birdoswald, where there will be a joint
programme on Friday.
Their presenter Paul Braithwaite, has a shorter journey, but will
spend some time exploring Roman Carlisle.

Lawson |
For our
team, once the programme was over, and they'd had a rest, it was back
into their boots and off again. Their guide and expert for this leg
was Roy Lawson.
He is from the Wall's Tourism Partnership, and is responsible for
'selling' it's history to visitors at home and abroad. He has also
acted as an advisor for our walk.
And in case you thought they might be getting weary, here's proof
that they were off at a gallop, ready to make more discoveries before
tomorrow's programme at the Chester's fort near Chollerford.
