BBC Travel News and TPEG
The BBC is an active member of an EBU-supported initiative to deliver a structured traffic and travel information exchange format, entitled 'TPEG'.
TPEG is currently produced in two variants, an XML-based markup language called 'tpegML' and a binary encoded format known commonly as 'TPEG binary'.
There is an experimental TPEG binary data service which currently broadcasts on the BBC's national DAB digital radio multiplex. It is a packet-mode subchannel (subchannel 62, packet address 3) named 'BBC Travel'.
This service provides a national snapshot of current traffic and travel information available from BBC Travel News.
For development purposes, the live data used to compile the TPEG binary stream is also available in a file, which can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/tpeg/incoming.tpg.
This is a section of a TPEG binary stream containing a single 'turn' of the current TPEG 'carousel' with the appropriate framing structure, messages and components.
In addition, the BBC Travel News website also operates an experimental demonstrator, which uses the XML-based TPEG variant, tpegML, to power a language-independent traffic and travel information service, utilising our database of content to produce travel reports in English, German, French, Welsh, Danish and Swedish.
