Lisa Stansfield
On the release of her greatest hits album, 'Biography', Lisa Stansfield talks about the next chapter in her career...

It's been ages since you've been on TOTP hasn't it?
Lisa: Yeah it has, but you soon slip back into it. There's the same old dressing rooms. It's great seeing who's on the show, checking them out in rehearsals. It's a really good day, long, but really good.

So what made you decide to do the greatest hits album now?
Lisa: It just seemed like the right time to do it. It's another chapter of my life really, from when I started out up until now. I want to do a lot more music now, so I'm eager to get on to the next part.

It's called 'Biography', so have you ever thought about writing a book about yourself?
Lisa: I think I've managed to do quite a lot in a relatively short space of time. But, I think when you get to about 50 or something, that's when you should do a biography. You've had a life then, it's much more interesting to read a book about a career spanning more than 20 years. But I might just dish the dirt on everyone one day! [laughs]

Are you writing new material at the moment then?
Lisa: We're just going to start writing after the promotion of this album. So, it should be a matter of about a month or so and we'll be back in the studio.

So what inspires you?
Lisa: Oh, all sorts of things. I've always been quite nosey. In social situations I'll be checking everyone out, ear-whigging other people's conversations and that. It's that sort of thing that gives me ideas for stuff. I'm a terrible people watcher.

Obviously one of your biggest hits was 'All Around The World' which has won you awards. But did you ever feel that it might be taking you over a bit?
Lisa: Yeah, at one point I did. I just thought, how many times do I have to sing this song? Or, am I going to be singing this for the rest of my life? And I probably will have to sing it for the rest of my life, but it doesn't bother me now. I've learnt to have a great amount of respect for that song. If it wasn't for 'All Around The World', I wouldn't have had the chance to do as many things as I have done. Also, it came out of my head, so I should be proud that it was liked by so many people. The impact was amazing and the awards look great on my mum's mantelpiece!

You did the film 'Swing' a while back, so do you have any more acting plans?
Lisa: Yeah, I'm supposed to be doing a few things this year, but I can't confirm anything yet.

You're known for being quite down-to-earth, so do you ever think it's strange that you ended up in show business?
Lisa: I am down-to-earth I think and I'm also quite shy. I get nervous about things easily. Sometimes I get like an out of body experience, you know when you're worrying and fretting so much that you just think WHY did I ever get myself into this? But when I'm actually performing, I really love it.
