BBC have done a big mistake taking off TOTP i think all the fans should do a protest at the bbc tv centre to get the show back on old and new fans i have not watch one TV show. So many memories of getting ready to go out with TOTP playing....Like another comment said, BBC like to take money but dont listen to what we all say.. Ok I live in the US and have never actually seen an episode of TOTP. But i did just happen to catch the Series Finale on VH1Classic. It seems like it is(or was) an awesome show. Being that i saw the finale on an MTV channel is their any chance of the show being picked up by MTV and broadcast world wide. I think it would be cool to have an iconic British show, have an audience not only in the UK or in Europe but America aswell.

I'm really surprised that people like Simon Cowell or Pete Waterman didn't do more to try and persuade the BBC to keep Top of the Pops going. After all the show has been used for years to promote both their established and up and coming artists. In its last years the viewing figures for Top of the Pops might have only been about a million at most but that's still about 700K more that you're likely to get for music shows on the satellite channels. For better or worse artists from reality TV music shows such as X Factor or Pop Idol will be the ones who will suffer most from the demise of Top of the Pops.

I've been a regular viewer since i first saw it back in the ninties, ahhhh the good old days when top of the pops really was a show full of the best pop music and when pop music was really pop music and the good old cheesy ballads... Top of the Pops used to be good but in the past couple of years it has been rubbish, with annoying presenters like Fearne Cotton who pretend they like all of the music and have no proper comments. The archive videos which they started to play were obviously given a low priority because they didn't even play them all of the way through.

i'm sorry but i'd like to say that, the last ever TOTP was rubbish and was not given the send off it so well deserved, being a teenager through the 80s i watched it religiously every week and would never miss a show it was fantastic, however things were never the same after the decade...anyway back to the final show, considering there were 40 years of footage to choose from i was bitterly disappointed with the choices of acts(showing entire performances of mainly 90s and 00s acts), i believe the BBC should have had a 3-4 hour show and dedicated an hour to each decade (god knows they have enough footage) please BBC let's have another programme dedicated to the glorious TOTP and realy give it a good send off this time god knows it deserves it!!! better still would be to re-run the entire 40 years again, not just a mish mash of snip-its on TOTP2.

TOTP was killed by two things; appalling music (the last song ever played was Hips Don't Lie, which says it all) and terrible management. Scheduling it for 7pm on Sundays is the worst possible decision; anybody who cares that much will have just listened to the chart on the radio. What should have happened was a move back to midweek, and (ideally) focus on the new tracks breaking through from the download chart; then it would have functioned effectively as a piece of promotional material. Still, we've all got 20/20 hindsight.

Wow, after 42 years TOTP is axed. How about these ideas for 2008's revival? (We KNOW there's going to be one). 1. Live acts only. If they can't get there, or can't sing, bring back the "Naughties" version of the Go Jo Girls to dance over their music! 2. Better time slot. Come on. Really. BBC1, 7pm. 30 minutes. 3. Broadcast on Radio 1 again. I know everyone has surround-sound TV now, but that's not the point. Broadcast in every way you can: TOTP live, anywhere. BBC1, Radio 1, mobile phones, LIVE on the TOTP website. Then make the podcasts available afterwards, and archive the show online. Make TOTP an EVENT again, without needing to be tied to your TV. 4. Give Chris Moyles a chance at presenting it. He's said he can revive, and he's proven he can attract ratings with his radio show. 5. No more archives. They're not in the charts any more, so they're not Top of the Pops. Leave that to TOTP2. 6. Make sure Fearne's in it. (That's my rather selfish request.)

I think they should have kept TOTP, even though I personally haven't watched it for years. It was a handy way of keeping up with the charts if you were a regular viewer. As some have already said, it needed an overhaul to make it stand out from the 24/7 pop channels, and an update to make it suitable to the noughties, not sixties. Suggestions: (i) return it to a prime time slot on BBC1, and make sure it doesn't clash with a popular soap on ITV1, such as Corrie or The Bill (or else viewers will simply switch over to that, and not record TOTP). (ii) have live acts. (iii) do a full countdown 40 to 11 with voice-over and pictures only, and 10 to 2 with snippets. Also include up/down/no move/new entry. (iv) Decent catchy sig - along the lines of Whole Lotta Love - perhaps even a revamped version of that. (v) If time allows, get presenter to talk to artistss, esp. no. 1. Basically make the whole thing something that will stand out from the crowd, and something people will want to watch, and (impatiently) look forward to watching each week as an alternative to digital TV pop channels (MTV etc). I hope the Xmas Day specials will continue.

How pathetic the last show was and people will still be talking about this final lament to the worlds longest running pop TV show for years to come. Instead of it being the best one since the first one it turned into THE worst tribute in TV history. I hope TOTP2 makes an effort to find and use the missing TOTP that we all know is out there (even in the BBC Archives) better footage DOES exist so please TOTP2 (if it does comeback) use it.

I would very much like to see the BBC bring back Top of the Pops, they have treated TOTP just the same way that they treated Dr Who, so many of us enjoyed both programmes and yet we had to go 16 years without Dr Who, thankfully now that is finally back. I would very much like to see the BBC bring back Top of the Pops, it is an iconic British programme, the viewing figures of the final episode show how many people are interested in it! For me there is now only 1 programme that I watch on BBC Television, and that is Dr Who, please bring back TOTP and then there will be 2 programmes to look forward to. I feel very sad that the BBC has gone so down hill, this year marks their 70th anniverary since television began at Alexandra Palace, come on BBC Television, be more like you used to be and let us all have those programmes back we enjoy, and please bring back TOTP and keep Dr Who on-air. Also please make all of the surviving 60's episodes and footage available on DVD unedited.

I think TOTP could be bought back but in a very different format to the last 42 years. Indie music seems to be the big thing now and is proving to be more popular then dance music. Maybe TOTP could be revamped and just include stuff from indie groups - that would be soooo cool - Rasorlight Kooks?? if not RIP TOTP.

I think that the BBC should look at these comments and seriously think about a good format and get some good presenters you lost the fun element when you revamped the show a couple of years back! You need to get some good presenters that are cool rather for kids! You need to just stick to chart hits not new rubbish that hasn't even charted yet! Guest presenters that aren't boring? new logo that doesn't say this show is for kids! Make it more exciting! Performance away from the studio were great where did they go! Video exclusives! Such a shame you've got rid of it because all it needed was a new fun element and more cool presenters! Bring it back with a good format nuff said!

I think TOTP shoul stay for the following reasons: a)Not all people have digital TV yet and rely on TOTP to give them the chart on tv b)It is a great show that makes people talk no matter what age or race c)it is a show that brings families together for half an hour. I think the BBC is mad for pulling it off the air, yes fair enough that MTV has 24/7 music, but do they have 30 mins of charts with live acts in peak time...no. iTv was mad about pullin CDUK off the air and now look at their ratings, they have slumped. The BBC should fight back MTV, it has been doing it with eastenders and corrie for the past 20 yrs so why not take on MTV now. Oh I forgot the BBC is handy at taking ur money through its television licenses, but doesn't listen to it's viewers on what they want. Plz what ever u do BBC do not put another soap, reality tv show, documentary, childrens show or any other of the garbage there is on tv now, PUT TOTP BACK ON THE AIR, IT IS NOT HARD. R.I.P. TOTP

And then the foolish motivation: 15 million viewers in the 70,s now just 3 million. It is still 3 million viewers, the BBC suffers from plain arrogance. TOTP died as soon as Andi Peters took over. Coupled with the influx of Boy bands, RnB and the Cowell/Chapman/Walsh/Thornton era of dross, music was never going to survive. In the right hands, with the right bands, TOTP could and should rise again.

Very sad to see TOTP finish - been watching since I was very young in the 60s (I'm 43 now). The warning signs were there however: As kids our parents used to moan at us for watching it & now as parents, our kids moan at us for watching it. Like the man said "The times, they are a-changin'"

I remember, as a kid watching big bands and solo artists like The Who or Madonna literally grow and mature, even when I lived on a British army base in Cyprus. It WILL be missed, but as with everything good, it was bound to end. Maybe its time to make way for a new Legendary show to be born......Goodbye TOTP.

im really sad its over, with all the terrible 2nd rate bands which have been on over the past couple of years, examples, busted,mcfly,girls aloud,that damn crazy frog etc, its like watching a once great and mighty animal slowly and painfully dying to now being put out of its misery. i think the bbc should bring it back in a year or two with new charismatic presenters, top bands, a theme tune as good as whole lotta love and some great new extras on the side. I was disapointed that shakira didnt perform on the last show, if she could of made it and chose not to i think it would of been very selfish and foolish of her as she would of gone down in history being the last ever act to perform on TOTP. Although i loved the farewell finale,with so many of the great acts shown and all the old presenters, it reminds us why we watched the show in the first place. Then at the very end watching jimmy savile turning the lights out and walking off was the end of a era for television and music. But for now, top of the pops, rest in well deserved peace.

Now I've moved back to France with my partner who religiously watched it throughout his youth. He spends his time telling our two boys about the 70s & 80s shows, so much so that it has become a routine contact (via Satellite) : Doctor Who on Saturday evening and TOTP on Sunday...before bedtime ! Good riddance. What we need now are music programmes with bands who don't mime and who are actually allowed to play their instruments. It's a shame TOTP is coming to an end. It's perfect slot was BBC ONE on Thursday nights at 7pm. Why on earth didn't the BBC just leave it at that time slot? Instead some twit in 1996 had the idea of Friday's at 7.30pm when yeah corrie is on!?! Then moved to BBC TWO on Sundays at 7pm, very un-cool! I think that the last show should have been back on BBC ONE at 7pm on a Thursday as a tribute to 42 and a half years of pop! All I can say is TOTP RIP!!!

I'm sad that TOTP is going, having watched the show for just over nine years, but the BBC have, overall, made the right decision. The name and style of the show is too dated nowadays-the name is very much of its time, the 1960's-butt I'm still sad that, after 42 years, Sir Jimmy Saville, Pans' People, Legs And Co. and-er, Fearne Cotton-that's it's coming to and end. The BBC need to come up with anew, more relevant music show that appeals to today's youth generation. Thing is though, I like the cheesiness!

Sad to see the end of totp's. Have watched it since young and i am now 50. My ambition was to be in the audience. Sadly didn't make it. they should bring back some of the older DJ's and keep the show going. What a loss!!!!

I will miss TOTP too but it has run its time it has served its purpose and has sent the benchmark and standard and format that has been duplicated worldwide. That will be the legacy of TOTP well done to everyone who was involved in the project over the 42 years and bringing so many memories I still am haunted by images of my sister Violet dancing to Pan's People and later on a flatmate who had a room full of every weeks TOTP video tapes thank god there was not a fire in the house that would have been an eternal flame!1

I'm more than sad over the fact that this, the best pop show on television ever, will go off the air after 42 years. For me as a foreingner this is another deep cut into the memories and identification I have with Great Britain. After the (very bad !) german edition of TOTP has gone off the air in Germany, I was not as sad as I'm now, 'cause I'm able watch the BBC via digital satellite in my country, including the superb original show. Why did you do it ? You're by far better than any other tv pop format in the world !!! I sincerly hope, you will regret your decision. Best regards, Oliver from Bremen.(a true TOTP fan!)

You can't close totp. ITV closed CDUK and now the BBC close TOTP. It's the end of a story of good live music. how can anyone see the video on mtv? it's just a video, you can't enjoy the live music from that singer. Please don't take totp off, they've already done with cduk but dont do it with totp.

i am so saddened at the axing of this tv show.to see this show off the air now is lick having a tooth pulled out & never replaced.this show was an instertution a show that can never be axed,somthing here has gone badly wrong & needs to be fixed

I think it is disgusting that you moved TOTP from one slot to another to the point where me and probably many others did not know where or when it was on. It was as if you were planning all along to take it off air and just needed a good excuse to do so! Bring it back and put it back on a Friday night. Is great to have it on to get ready for a night out too!!!

I'm 50 and have watched TOTP from day 1, it's the only program my 13 year old daughter and I watch together !! In 30 mins I can see new releases find out who's number 1 and see bands live. I haven't got the time to surf the web or sky or freeview. The BBC must be nuts TOTP spans the generations as does Doctor Who , oh yes, that's the only program my son and I watch together regularly. Why does the BBC pander to niches when it does the big picture better than anyone, what's going next Blue Peter ????

i hate the bbc for taking TOTP off the tele. i dont watch alot of tv but that (along with coranation street) was the only thing i watched i guess unless you put TOTP or something similar back on the tele bbc i wont be watching the bbc anymore cos all you ever put on is crap like nature programmes or cooking programmes the only thing for kids or teenagers is cbbc and thats a load of rubbish!!!!!! please bring TOTP back!!!! :(

Clearly there is still room on the web for a decent music site. You need to be cutting edge though with the latest in Gossip, news, bands, releases everything it also need to be a musiclopedia. with archives from the beginning of TOTP right up to the last show. We should be able to search the site to find video of any band who has ever appeared on TOTP and see it online. I'm sure this will keep you busy for a while, so get on with it!!

thanks beeb: not everyone, despite what the media says has sky or has freeview, the only way to see my fav pop and rock stars on tv is on Totp. having a peak time, weekly music programme which catered for all age groups and all tastes is really wonderfull, not many countries in the world has such a programme. as i said it's world famous for a reason, unique and has been the programme which many of the big acts would bee seen by the most peapole of all ages. by not having Real d.j's present it and having comics and kiddy presenters has the beeb delibertely ran this famous show into the ground? do we really have to get rid of it to make room for more crap, celeb chef programmes and big brother and more soaps like holby city....oh that is the plan :(
