The Unessential Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson's double album of greatest hits (his sixth!) may have charted at Number 2 here, but in the US hardly anybody is interested. It's sold a shocking 8,000 copies in its first week of release, despite all the free publicity afforded by his recent trial. Guess there IS such a thing as bad publicity after all.
Publicist Max Clifford, who basically writes the Sunday tabloids' celebrity stories single-handed, wasn't surprised. He told Yahoo: "He came to me a month ago and I turned him down. It would be the hardest job in PR after Saddam Hussein and I would be astounded if he could turn things around. People were extremely offended by even some of the things he admitted in court. The final judgement is with the record buying public and they have made their verdict clear."
Well, not quite, Max. Us Brits seem quite happy to shell out for his CDs, it's the yanks who have the problem. Still, it doesn't bode well for his proposed post-trial comeback, does it!?
