Until recently Babyshambles have been best known for frontman Peter Doherty's wild behaviour. But now, as Pete, Patrick and Drew told us backstage, they want to be famous for all the right reasons...

TOTP: Has it been hard to deal with being viewed as Pete Doherty's side project?
Pete: I think it's been really hard for a lot of journalists. They can't get it into their heads. But we try to help them as best we can.
Drew: With time, as the music comes out, they'll realise that. But it doesn't matter, anyway.

TOTP: How does it feel to be on this show?
Drew: I've been looking forward to it all week.
Patrick: Yeah, me too.
Drew: I think it's one of those things that you can tell your granny you're playing at The Astoria and she's all "that's nice, dear", but if you tell her you're playing on Top of the Pops, she understands. It's a fantastic thing, so in that sense it's wonderful.

TOTP: Has it brought you closer to your nan?
Drew: Well, kind of, yeah! My whole family, I think. Now they don't think I'm a waster any more.
Patrick: It's true, actually. It's a proper job.

TOTP: A lot of the focus has been on Pete. What were you guys doing before Babyshambles?
Patrick: Ummm...playing guitar in various bands, writing my own music, but not really getting it heard. There's been a lot of focus on Pete, but that's for a good reason.
Drew: I was doing the same, just bands, you know. Scratching at the lid of my coffin, trying to make it, trying to reach what we're doing now.

TOTP: You don't feel intimidated by this wave of expectation that Pete's brought with him?
Pete: No, they don't give a f***. They know who I am.
Drew: If you're involved in a project of any kind, if you and the people you're doing it with believe in it, it doesn't matter if anyone else believes in it. If there's a lot of expectation, that's a good thing because we can easily meet that, because the songs are great and we can all play really well. So it doesn't matter. We will deliver it.

TOTP: It's the stuff of romance.
Pete: It's the stuff of tragedy too.
Drew: I think this band's only operating at about 40% of the potential that it could be. We're improving all the time.

TOTP: Pete, you've been in the Top 40 with three different acts... are you getting more offers to collaborate?
Pete: I know I've been doing all this different stuff but it's not me going up to people or them coming to me, it just happens. That thing with Graham Coxon last week [Pete joined Graham onstage at one of his gigs last week - live events-mad Ed], that just happened.

TOTP: Finally then, what would you say if someone offered to do a reality TV show about Babyshambles?
Pete: [points to Patrick] He would say 'How much?'
Patrick: It already feels like we are a reality TV show.
Pete: Yeah it's all there already. We have these people who've been with us, filming. It's all gonna come out. There'll be nowhere to hide.
