Catherine Tregenna

Torchwood series writer Catherine Tregenna spoke to us about how she approached writing Adam.

How did you come up with the story?

This was one the sadistic production team of Torchwood allocated to me. They wanted a story about an alien feeding off the team's memories, then they left me to it. It hurt my brain more than you could imagine. I think I've buried the memory.

Adam sees the first look at Captain Jack's family, how did you approach writing this? Did you write any back story to help the process?

I had the chance to write some back story in the episode Captain Jack Harkness, Episode 12, Series One. This episode, Adam, was a huge responsibility. After all Captain Jack's seen, what would matter? I wanted to draw on a timeless eternal memory, something that humanised him, something that he didn't want to lose after he recovered it. He has seen countless aliens but he hasn't lost many brothers.

Adam sees an impostor penetrate the hub, if you could go in the real hub, what's the first thing you would do?

Look for a way out. Damn, it's scary in there. I like my real life. I'm not brave.

Do you ever write any coded messages in your Torchwood scripts?

No. It's hard enough writing the episodes without thinking about codes!

So far you've written four Torchwood episodes, (Out of Time, Captain Jack Harkness, Meat and Adam). If you had a dinner party, which characters from those episodes would you invite round and why?

I'll pick one from each. Diane Holmes from Out of Time because I did loads of research on female pilots during WWII and they absolutely fascinate me. And now, as I've ruined my chances of pulling by inviting such a hottie, I'll pick the real Captain Jack Harkness from Captain Jack Harkness, 'cause he's melancholy and gorgeous, Rhys from Meat (if I'm allowed a regular character) so that we can tuck into the beers and talk in Welsh and, it's got to be Adam, hasn't it?

Well, that's the night forgotten then!

What's your favourite line in Adam?

Tosh's line - 'Knowing I'm special, waiting for someone to see it'....
