The Show
Series 8 - Episode 3
On a master-and-commander-meets-swallows-and-amazons Top Gear, the presenters each set about creating their own amphibious vehicles.
No one has produced an aquatic vehicle that's sold more than a couple of units. Most don't even make it past the prototype stage. So, armed with their extensive experience of mechanical tinkering, who better to try to crack the boat/car formula than our intrepid presenters. James bought a Triumph Herald, Richard a VW Camper, Jeremy a Toyota Hilux.
Once Jeremy had extinguished the flames, James fitted his mast, and Richard attached a duck, the challenge began. It immediately became clear that James wouldn't have a lot of success wherever speeds of more than 30mph were required, and his 30ft mast made low bridges a bit of an issue. Richard was only able to drive on perfectly flat ground, as his camper was woefully underpowered. Jeremy, on the other hand, locked the suspension, so bumps were a real pain in the back.
Who would make it across the reservoir without drowning or getting hypothermia?
It was immediately apparent that the only place Richard's craft was going was the bottom of the reservoir. Jeremy, in a rare charitable moment, picked him up, and the two got on their way with James in pursuit (though scarcely moving). But soon even Jeremy's super Toyboata began to take on water. One overzealous flick of the wheel saw it capsize.
When James finally arrived, 346 hours later, he was declared the winner. Mainly because he was the only one whose vehicle was still above water.
