After the success of the Aston versus train race, Jeremy was keen to up the stakes while answering another pan-European travel question. If you were planning a skiing holiday, would it be faster to drive or fly to Verbier in the Alps? Yes, that's a car - albeit a 196mph Ferrari 612 Scaglietti - against a jet airliner. Surely the result could only go one way? But that's to bet against the determination of one Jeremy Clarkson.
Whilst the finish for the Aston DB9 race wasn't quite as close as it looked on telly, the end of this epic battle really was that tight. In fact, James and Richard would have won if they hadn't missed an earlier bus by mere seconds, costing them 20 minutes in the final sprint to Verbier.
As he homed in on the finish, Jeremy was convinced he was still miles from Verbier and destined to lose. Only when he arrived at the edge of the town did he realise he was much closer than he thought. Turns out he'd misread the scale on his map.
This whole race really did have a happy ending, because one of the production team arrived in Verbier to find her boyfriend had secretly flown out ahead of her to get down on bended knee in the snow and propose. Of course she said "yes" and they're now happily married. Ahhh.
