When Ferrari announced its latest limited-run hypercar the company was so proud, they named it after the man who founded the company. Unfortunately, the firm wasn't so proud that it could spare one for a Top Gear test. No matter, said Jeremy, my old mate Nick Mason from Pink Floyd has just taken delivery of his and says we're welcome to borrow it, so long as we plug his new book. Isn't that against BBC guidelines on advertising, we said? Don't worry, Clarkson replied, I'm so keen to drive this car I've worked out a very subtle way to get round that...
Note Jeremy's repeated references to Pink Floyd album titles during this film, including 'Saucer Full Of Secrets', 'Atom Heart Mother', 'Obscured By Clouds', 'The Delicate Sound Of Thunder', 'The Division Bell' and 'Ummagumma'.
Note also that the underside of Mason's helicopter is painted to look like sky. Which is kind of cool.
The wry plugging of his book was, quite obviously, a bit of a gag. Unfortunately, the BBC didn't quite see it that way and gave us a right old telling off.
This is actually the second time Mason has featured on Top Gear. His first was a surprise appearance as 'rock star walking down lane' in Jeremy's test of the Audi RS6 and Mercedes E55 AMG.
Top Gear's executive producer is probably Pink Floyd's biggest fan, and reasoned that, by having bought all of their albums on vinyl, cassette and CD, he was at least partly responsible for Mason being able to afford the Enzo in the first place. He still wasn't allowed to have a go, though.
